Road Marking Specialist – 2 Month Contract

Rate

£22.52 per hour (Umbrella)
Contract: 2 Month Contract
Location: Northallerton
Hours: Full Time
Shift Pattern:
07:30 – 16:15 (8 hours with 30-minute break)
16:00 – 00:30 (8 hours with 30-minute break)
Pay: Bi-weekly

Summary

We are seeking an experienced Road Marking Specialist to join our dynamic Highways Operations team. This role is crucial in delivering road and surface marking projects across the highway network, ensuring all tasks are executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. The position involves traveling to various sites in a company vehicle to perform highway line painting, operate specialized equipment, and support both winter maintenance and emergency response operations. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in road marking operations, be adept at working outdoors, and possess the ability to operate specialized machinery safely within live highway environments.

Responsibilities

Road Marking Operations

  • Apply permanent and temporary road markings using thermoplastic and paint materials.
  • Conduct line painting works to meet highway specifications.
  • Install new road markings according to approved designs.
  • Ensure accuracy and quality of all installed markings.
  • Remove existing road markings using approved methods.

Specialist Equipment Operation

  • Operate specialized road marking machinery and vehicles.
  • Use hand applicators, extrusion equipment, and other specialized tools.
  • Conduct daily inspections of plant and equipment.
  • Report any defects and maintenance needs promptly.
  • Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.

Traffic Management

  • Set up, maintain, and dismantle temporary traffic management systems.
  • Install traffic management measures, including cones, signs, barriers, and safety zones.
  • Ensure compliance with Chapter 8 requirements and safe working practices.
  • Maintain safe work zones for staff, road users, and the public.

Site Preparation & Delivery

  • Prepare highway surfaces before applying road markings.
  • Clean, dry, and prime surfaces as required.
  • Ensure work sites are safe and ready for installation.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and site representatives for efficient project delivery.

Record Keeping

  • Accurately complete daily records.
  • Maintain records of materials used, site attendance, completed works, vehicle checks, and health & safety documentation.
  • Utilize both paper and electronic systems as required.

Winter Maintenance & Emergency Response

  • Support winter maintenance operations.
  • Assist with loading salt, installing snow plough attachments, hand salting, snow clearance, and monitoring highway hazards.
  • Participate in emergency response and out-of-hours call-out rotas.

Health & Safety

  • Adhere to all Health & Safety procedures and policies.
  • Work safely within live highway environments.
  • Report hazards, incidents, accidents, and near misses.
  • Take responsibility for personal safety and the safety of colleagues and road users.
  • Ensure environmental and quality standards are consistently maintained.

Requirements

Essential

  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Experience in road marking and line marking works.
  • Proficiency in applying thermoplastic and paint road markings.
  • Experience with road marking equipment and specialist machinery.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and site specifications.
  • Knowledge of highway health and safety requirements.
  • Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Physical fitness to undertake demanding work.
  • Willingness to participate in out-of-hours call-out and emergency response rotas.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable

  • HGV Licence.
  • NRSWA Accreditation.
  • Banksman Certification.
  • Safe Dig Training.
  • Manual Handling Training.
  • Abrasive Wheels Training.
  • Emergency First Aid Qualification.
  • Previous experience in highway maintenance or with local authorities.
