Due to the continued growth of our work programmes, we are looking for enthusiastic applicants to join our Construction Delivery team. We have a range of positions available at our Ferndown, Stalbridge, Bridport, and Charminster locations, supporting the delivery of works throughout Dorset.
About the Role
Dorset Highways carries out Dorset Council’s responsibilities as a highway authority for Dorset’s network. The service manages over 2,400 miles of carriageway. We are responsible for everything associated with the highway assets such as bridges & structures, cycleways, footways, drainage, and road signs & markings.
Roles Available
- Roadworker Level 1
- Salary: £26,427 - £28,153
- Potential for Highway Maintenance Skilled Operative Level 2 apprenticeships with this post current starting salary of £27,709
- Roadworker Level 2 (Ganger)
- Salary: £27,709 - £30,515
- Roadworker Level 3 (Chargehand)
- Salary: £29,542 - £33,673
Working Hours
Based on an annual 37-hour working week:
- Winter: 07:45 – 15:30 Monday – Friday (35 hours)
- Summer: 07:45 – 16:30 Monday – Thursday, 07:45 – 15:30 Friday (39 hours)

About You
You are a passionate, dedicated individual interested in a career in Highway Construction and Maintenance. You enjoy working outdoors and learning new skills. You care about your local area and want to contribute to making Dorset a better place to live, work, and visit.
Ideally, you will have practical construction experience at either skilled or supervisory level. However, this is not essential as Dorset Council is committed to developing a fully trained and diverse team.
Roadworker Roles
- Roadworker Level 1
- Entry level with the potential to complete a Highway Maintenance Skilled Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship
- Roadworker Level 2
- Experience in Highways/Construction work, Agricultural work and/or LGV drivers (gully tanker operators or similar)
- Roadworker Level 3
- Considerable experience leading and supervising on Highway/Construction projects.
What We Will Need From You
- A full driving Licence.
- A willingness to learn, be part of a team, be adaptable and reliable.
Ideally, but not essential, experience in some or all the areas below:
- Surface dressing
- Line marking
- Kerbing
- Concrete work
- Paving and slabbing
- Laying asphalt
- Drainage
- Iron works
- Post erection
- Sign erection
- Fencing
- Plant or agricultural operators
- HGV drivers
Further Information
This post requires significant travel. You must have a vehicle (or transport we deem suitable) available for use as needed.

Additional Information
Our services run 365 days a year, 24 hours per day, therefore there will be a mandatory requirement and opportunity to participate on an out of hours standby rota. All staff will be trained to drive LGV vehicles for gritting and snow clearance.

- The current standby payment is £198 for each week on call. This is paid in addition to your salary.
- Overtime for emergency call outs is paid at time and a half.
