Job Title

Robotics Software Engineer

Salary

£70k-£100k + Equity

Company Description

Mutable Tactics is a pre-seed robotics startup based in Cambridge building the orchestration layer for autonomous fleets. We turn solo robots into cohesive, intelligent teams by developing "Mastermind," a sophisticated decision engine that fuses symbolic task planning with probabilistic state estimation for real-time mission execution.

Job Description

You will own core "Mastermind" modules, transforming high-level decision engines—including symbolic task planning and behavior trees—into high-performance, real-time C++ for edge compute. Working directly with the CTO in a team of four, you will take autonomous systems from prototype to deterministic field trials on real flight hardware.

Location

Cambridge, UK

Why this role is remarkable

  • Directly architect the decision-making "brain" of multi-robot systems, moving beyond simple simulation to real-world flight trials and field operations.
  • Join an elite founding team of four in a pre-seed environment where your technical decisions immediately shape the core product and company trajectory.
  • Solve the complex problem of coordinating heterogeneous robotic fleets under real-world uncertainty, sensor degradation, and mission-critical time constraints.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What You Will Do

  • Design and implement core modules in modern C++ (17/20) for task execution, world-state management, and platform adapters for autonomous vehicles.
  • Develop the reasoning side of the world model by abstracting fused perception tracks into symbolic states for the PDDL-based decision engine.
  • Integrate partner platforms using MAVLink and ROS 2, leading field trials and ensuring deterministic performance on hardware like NVIDIA Jetson.

The ideal candidate

  • Extensive production experience in modern C++ (17/20) focusing on concurrency, memory ownership, and performance profiling for real-time robotic systems.
  • Deep technical background in symbolic task planning (PDDL), behavior trees, or decision-making under uncertainty (POMDPs) for real-world applications.
  • Proven track record of shipping software for real physical robots using ROS 2 and Linux, with eligibility for UK SC clearance.
