GTS is supporting a major UK rail organisation involved in the procurement and delivery of a new generation of high-speed rolling stock.
We are looking for an experienced Principal Rolling Stock Technical Manager to provide specialist engineering expertise and technical leadership throughout the fleet’s design, manufacture, testing, commissioning and introduction into service.
You will represent the future operator’s requirements, ensuring the trains deliver against operational, maintenance, safety, passenger-experience and commercial objectives. This is an influential position involving collaboration with the train manufacturer, maintainer, government stakeholders and senior railway professionals.
Key responsibilities

- Review complex engineering and design documentation, identify technical risks and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Ensure operational, maintenance, safety and passenger requirements are incorporated into the fleet design.
- Lead defined rolling-stock workstreams, potentially including train interiors, materials, finishes, branding and customer-experience requirements.
- Support the development of fleet, depot, maintenance, servicing, cleaning and testing strategies.
- Contribute to future fleet strategies and wider operational-readiness plans.
- Undertake technical analysis, optioneering, cost modelling and whole-life cost assessments.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
