The Annual Round the Island Race
The annual Round the Island Race is a one day race around the Isle of Wight that attracts over 1,400 boats and around 15,000 sailors each year! Making it one of the largest yacht races in the world, and the fourth largest sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.
This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in a race with world-renowned sailors racing against families and first-time racers, in the same event! Whether you compete regularly or are new to the sport, taking part in the Island Sailing Club’s Round the Island Race is a day to remember, sailing in one of the world’s largest sailing events in some of the best sailing waters.

Weekend Itinerary
Friday
- Practice day en route from Hamble to Cowes. We berth at Cowes and have access to the Race Village where the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with live music and pop up food bars.
Saturday
- Race Day!
- We head out early for the fantastic spectacle of all the yachts preparing for the start.
- The boats cross the start line at Cowes in eleven separate groups, starting every 10 minutes from 0630 until 0810 and heading in a westerly direction towards Yarmouth.
- Then it’s the squeeze through Hurst Point and round the Needles Lighthouse, along the south-west coast of the Island to St. Catherine’s Point and then up across Sandown Bay to round the Bembridge Ledge Buoy.
- The fleet then makes its way towards Portsmouth and the No Man’s Land Fort and then head back towards Cowes passing Osborne Bay and on to the finish line back at Cowes.
- Back to Cowes and the Race Village for a well-earned refreshment and live music.

Sunday
- A leisurely breakfast and return sail from Cowes back to Hamble for mid-afternoon.
All race village socialising is subject to Covid restrictions.

- Professional skipper and mate, both of which are Yachtmasters.
- Food on board whilst racing.
