Key Responsibilities

As a UAS Senior Technician, you’ll report to the Team Leader and play a pivotal role in:

  • Preparation, maintenance, and operation of Uncrewed Systems (UAS) assets for Test & Evaluation trials.
  • Daily responsibilities: Scheduled and routine maintenance of UAS platforms, following approved data, manuals, and safety protocols, while operating systems aligned with individual competency.
  • Technical workflows:
    • Building, functional testing, repairing, and disassembling UAS and associated payloads per approved specifications.
    • Operating and maintaining UAS during operational trials.
    • Conducting troubleshooting and fault diagnosis on UAS and linked equipment.
    • Ensuring aligned delivery to customer target requirements.
  • Adhering to all regulatory and operational standards, including:
    • CAA Regulatory Publications
    • OEM Manuals
    • QinetiQ Operating Framework
    • Relevant Air Publications

Required Experience & Skills

Essential Requirements:

  • 3–5 years of experience working in regulated and safety-critical environments focused on Uncrewed Systems.
  • UAS flying experience (demonstrable to maintain safety and operational compliance).
  • Extensive knowledge of multiple UAS technologies, types, and configurations.
  • High-level IT proficiency, with the ability to learn and adapt to new software systems as needed.
  • Practical expertise in utilising online manuals and maintenance recording systems.

Essential Qualifications & Licences

  • CAA Remote Piloting qualifications (highly desirable).
  • Engineering qualification (Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical) or completion of a relevant engineering apprenticeship.
  • Professional registration as an Eng Techs (Engineering Technician), or willingness to progress to this status.
  • Full valid UK driving licence.

Role Details

  • Contract: 37-hour week (minimum 3 days/week on-site attendance).
  • Work Patterns: Hybrid flexibility, with occasional travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites (working across multiple locations may be required).
  • Location: Farnborough site, our flagship facility for high-energy laser technologies, 5m pressurised wind tunnel, and cutting-edge R&D.
  • Requirements for Role Access:
    • UK Security Vetting (SC clearance) mandatory. Applicants must be eligible for SC security clearance; further guidance available here.
