Rust Engineering Lead - Linux and Open Source
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Rust Engineering Lead - Linux and Open Source based in United Kingdom.
This role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of Linux and open source software through the adoption of Rust across system-level technologies. You will design and deliver high-quality software while helping identify areas where Rust can improve the reliability, security, and maintainability of existing systems. Working in a fully distributed engineering environment, you will collaborate with colleagues and open source communities across time zones. The position combines hands-on software development with technical advocacy, architectural thinking, and engineering leadership. You will contribute across a broad technology landscape, from system services and embedded software to desktop and cloud-related capabilities. The role is suited to engineers who are passionate about Linux, open source, and building software that can have a broad impact.
Accountabilities:
- Lead and contribute to Rust engineering initiatives across Linux and open source projects, combining hands-on development with technical leadership and community collaboration.
- Design, implement, test, and document high-quality software using Rust on Linux.
- Drive and advocate for broader Rust adoption across internal and upstream open source projects.
- Identify existing projects, services, and codebases where Rust adoption could deliver meaningful technical benefits.
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues encountered by users and contributors.
- Participate in code reviews, architectural reviews, and broader engineering processes.
- Collaborate with colleagues and open source communities to develop technical specifications and architectural solutions.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering, development, and operational practices.
- Deploy and operate services developed by the team where required.
- Provide technical advocacy and contribute to the long-term success of assigned products and projects.
- Help advance Linux and open source development through knowledge sharing and community participation.

Requirements:
- Accomplished software engineer with strong Linux experience, a passion for Rust and open source, and the ability to work independently in a highly distributed environment.
- Demonstrated professional experience designing and developing high-quality Rust software on Linux.
- Strong hands-on experience with Linux at the system level and familiarity with multiple Linux environments is highly valued.
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a compelling alternative professional or academic background.
- Strong academic record and a demonstrated history of significant technical achievement.
- Experience building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs for more senior positions.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, technical curiosity, and a track record of delivering beyond expectations.
- Ability to organize work effectively, work independently, and consistently deliver to schedule.
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across cultures, teams, and time zones.
- Professional and thoughtful communication with colleagues, partners, and open source communities.
- High levels of accountability, flexibility, self-motivation, and attention to results.
- Passion for Rust, Linux, open source software, and continuous technical improvement.
- Willingness and ability to travel twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
- Experience with Ubuntu or related open source technologies is a plus.
- Familiarity with technologies such as LXD, MicroK8s, Snap, IoT, Juju, Ubuntu Core, or Ubuntu Pro is advantageous.
- Experience in performance engineering or security is valued.
