Safeguarding Engagement Officer

The key responsibilities involve engagement with clubs, supporting Club Safeguarding Officers and the implementation of Club Safeguarding Plans to ensure that we have safe and inclusive environments in Welsh Rugby.

We are recruiting three Safeguarding Engagement Officers, with one post aligned to each of the following geographical areas:

  • North & Mid Wales
  • West Wales
  • East Wales

These are hybrid roles, with an expectation of regular presence at an appropriate WRU office base, alongside significant travel across the geographical area covered by the role.

A key part of the role will be spending time within the rugby community. This will include regular visits to rugby clubs to build relationships, provide safeguarding support and work closely with Club Safeguarding Officers and Club Committees.

Successful candidates should therefore expect to travel frequently throughout their allocated region as an essential part of the role.

Due to the level and nature of travel required, successful candidates will need to hold a full, valid UK driving licence and have access to their own vehicle for business use. Appropriate business-use insurance will be required. Business mileage will be reimbursed in line with the WRU’s expenses arrangements.

Closing Date: Sunday 20th September 2026
Salary: £25,690 per annum

The Person

  • Previous experience in safeguarding is preferred.
  • Knowledge of, or involvement in, sport.
  • Experience working within a sports governing body or similar organisation, ideally in a safeguarding or regulatory role.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in database management.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Strong teamworking skills.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of safeguarding policies, procedures and best practice.
  • The ability to communicate and work through the medium of Welsh is desirable.

The Role

  • Building Positive Relationships with clubs through club visits to support and develop Safeguarding Best Practice.
  • Responsible as the first point of contact to support Club Safeguarding Officers and Club Committees relating to safeguarding matters.
  • Responsible for promoting Safeguarding Training opportunities.
  • Responsible for promoting the Safeguarding Toolkit and other safeguarding resources.
  • Planning and Co-ordinating support for clubs in developing their Club Safeguarding Plans.
  • Responsible for co-ordinating and delivering CSO induction training.
  • Quality Assurance responsibilities to establish commitment to the Club Safeguarding Plans.
  • Responsible for supporting Clubs in the investigation of Lower-Level Concerns.
  • Conducting Safeguarding Risk Assessments in relation to Safe Recruitment.
  • Provide additional resilience in other aspects of Safeguarding (Case Management, Safe Recruitment and other Safeguarding Practice) when required.
  • Supporting other functions in the Integrity Regulatory and Competitions Dept. (Discipline; Player Welfare; Anti-Doping; Competitions) when required.
  • Working with key partners to deliver Safe and Inclusive Environments in line with the WRU Strategy.
  • Carry out duties in support of the WRU Group Strategic Mission, Purpose and Values.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
