Safeguarding and Wellbeing Link Member
Education Governing Committee
Remote, Devon or Cornwall based
Four 2-hour committee meetings per year for a 2-year term minimum
Role Overview
The Safeguarding and Wellbeing Link Member plays a key role in supporting and strengthening governance of ROC College by providing specialist expertise and oversight in relation to safeguarding, learner wellbeing, and welfare. The role provides independent scrutiny and assurance to the Education Governing Committee that safeguarding arrangements are effective, regulatory requirements are being met, and a strong culture of safeguarding exists across the College.
Key Responsibilities
- Fulfil the responsibilities of a member of the Education Governing Committee.
- Provide strategic oversight and independent scrutiny of safeguarding arrangements across ROC College.
- Act as the Committee's lead member for safeguarding and learner wellbeing.
- Review safeguarding assurance reports, policies, audits, and performance information ensuring they comply with statutory duties.
- Meet regularly with the college Designated Safeguarding Lead to review data and provide constructive challenge regarding safeguarding practice, culture, and compliance.
- Support the Committee in gaining assurance that safeguarding risks are identified, monitored, and effectively managed.
- Monitor learner wellbeing, mental health, attendance, and engagement as key indicators of learner safety.
- Participate in safeguarding-focused visits, learning walks, and assurance activities where appropriate.
- Promote a culture where safeguarding is recognised as everyone's responsibility.
- Maintain strategic focus rather than operational safeguarding focus.
- Act as an ambassador for ROC College and United Response.
- Attend Committee meetings and contribute actively to governance activities.
- Support United Response’s Safeguarding Forum as and when required.

Candidate Profile
We are looking for people who can demonstrate:
- A commitment to the vision, values, and mission of United Response and ROC College.
- Experience or expertise in safeguarding, child protection, adult safeguarding, or learner wellbeing.
- Knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities within education, health, social care, or related sectors.
- The ability to analyse information, identify risks, and provide effective challenge.
- Strong strategic thinking and sound judgement.
- Confidence to hold leaders to account while maintaining positive professional relationships.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Integrity, discretion, and a commitment to confidentiality.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a diverse committee.
- A willingness to undertake safeguarding and governance training.

Desirable Experience
- Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead experience.
- Safeguarding within further education, SEND, or specialist education.
- Social work, health, youth work, or social care.
- Mental health and wellbeing.
- Inspection, audit, quality assurance, or compliance.
- Governance, trustee, or committee experience.
- Lived experience of disability, autism, or learning disabilities.
