Safety Engineer (Junior to Senior)

Department: Engineering Employment Type: Permanent – Full Time Location: Bristol, UK Reports To: Josie Anderson


About the Role

Rowden is expanding its safety engineering capability and is looking for Safety Engineers at all experience levels to support the full project lifecycle—from requirements engineering, system architecture, and integration to verification and validation.

You’ll contribute to safety-driven decision-making across mission-critical systems, with opportunities to grow your expertise and take on increasing responsibility, depending on your level. More senior roles will focus on shaping safety strategy, influencing programmes, and mentoring teams as Rowden scales.

Key Detail: This role requires at least 3 days per week on-site at Rowden’s Bristol HQ.


Salary Ranges (DOE)

-dependent on experience—

  • Junior Level: £32,000 – £45,000
  • Mid Level: £42,000 – £60,000
  • Senior: £57,000 – £70,000
  • Note: Candidates must be eligible for SC security clearance.

Key Areas of Responsibility

(All Levels)

  • Drive safety engineering activities across projects, including planning, execution, and tool usage (e.g., JIRA, JAMA).
  • Support or lead safety work packages, ensuring adherence to schedule, budget, and quality targets.
  • Apply safety analysis techniques like FMEA, HAZOP, and BowTie.
  • Contribute to or define safety strategy and methodologies, outlining deliverables and milestones.
  • Support system design through architectural evaluation, trade studies, and technical feasibility analysis.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation, ensuring clarity, consistency, and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Create safety arguments and artefacts (e.g., hazard logs, legal compliance assessments, safety case reports).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and build strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Champion the continuous improvement of Rowden’s safety engineering practices.

  • Present updates and progress in project reviews (responsibility increases with grade).

(Senior Roles Only)

  • Lead safety strategy and execution across projects/programmes.
  • Provide technical leadership and domain expertise.
  • Manage key stakeholders and customer interfaces.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers.
  • Shape and enhance organisation-wide safety capability.

Essential Skills & Experience

(All Levels)

  • Strong grasp of systems engineering and safety engineering fundamentals.
  • Proven analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.
  • Collaborative mindset with agility to work in cross-functional teams.

(Developing/Mid-Level Engineers)

  • Hands-on experience in safety activities like hazard identification and analysis.
  • Knowledge of safety lifecycles and common techniques (e.g., FMEA, HAZOP).
  • Contributed to safety documentation and Requirements Engineering.
  • Awareness of relevant industry standards, regulations, or engineering environments.

(Senior Engineers)

  • Proven leadership in safety engineering across project lifecycles.
  • Expertise in safety requirements elicitation (including derived requirements).
  • Deep technical knowledge of safety analysis methods and their use cases.
  • Experience defining safety strategy and influencing system design.
  • Ability to manage work packages, balance priorities, and align dependencies.
  • Mentored or led engineering teams.
  • Experience engaging with customers and attending reviews.
  • Understanding of Government engineering and procurement environments.
