About the Role
Supporting the health & safety function, the role is designed to develop a dedicated health & safety resource for the transport operation, providing support across a wide range of safety activities whilst building the knowledge, skills and experience required to become a qualified health & safety professional within the business.
What you'll do at work
Supporting the Health & Safety function across Reed Boardall's transport and operational activities, whilst undertaking a recognised Health & Safety apprenticeship programme leading to a professional qualification, an apprentice will gain practical experience in accident prevention, incident investigation, compliance monitoring and continuous improvement within a fast-paced transport and warehousing environment.
The apprentice will work closely with the Health & Safety Manager and operational managers, supporting activities including:
Incident Management & Investigation -
- Supporting the investigation of vehicle accidents and road traffic incidents
- Assisting with driver safety investigations and transport-related incidents
- Recording and monitoring personal accidents, injuries and workplace incidents
- Supporting the reporting and investigation of near misses
- Assisting with accident, incident and root cause investigations
- Supporting RIDDOR reporting requirements and maintaining associated records
- Tracking corrective and preventative actions to completion
Compliance & Risk Management -
- Assisting with the completion and review of risk assessments
- Supporting compliance monitoring against internal health & safety procedures
- Maintaining health & safety documentation, records and reporting systems
- Monitoring trends, recurring incidents and areas of risk
- Producing safety performance data and reports to support decision-making
Workplace & Transport Safety -
- Supporting safety initiatives relating to vehicles, drivers and transport activities
- Assisting with vehicle and pedestrian safety assessments across site operations
- Participating in workplace inspections, audits and safety observations
- Supporting depot safety activities and operational risk reduction programmes
- Helping to identify opportunities to improve safety performance and compliance
Training & Safety Culture -
- Supporting the delivery of toolbox talks and safety briefings
- Assisting with safety communications and awareness campaign
- Promoting a positive safety culture across transport, warehousing and operational teams
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives designed to enhance health, safety and wellbeing throughout the business

- Present and hold an audience's attention, for example when delivering SHE training, toolbox talks, inductions or presenting data or investigation findings to the workforce or management team. Show they can sell the SHE message, have personal impact, deal with challenge, reflect on personal performance, use appropriate language for the audience
- Assist the management team in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Safety, Health and Environmental Management System by updating systems in line with changes in legislation or best practice, delivering training, coaching operational teams and undertaking workplace inspections
- Provide advice on the practical implementation of the company's SHE policies and processes applying generic industry guidance into the context of the workplace
- Identify the hazards and evaluate: workplace instructions that are relevant to the individual’s job; working practices in the individual’s job that may harm themselves or others’; aspects of the individual’s job that could harm themselves or others; which of the potentially harmful working practices and aspects of the individual’s work present the highest risks to themselves or others; how to deal with hazards in accordance with workplace instructions and legal requirements
- Support the practical application of the workplace instructions and suppliers or manufacturers instructions for the safe use of equipment, materials and products
- Support and assist in the implementation of SHE inspections and monitoring systems demonstrating the balance between enforcement and internal support
- Undertake and/or assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of SHE performance
- Prepare and maintain records relating to safety, health and environmental matters that comply with legal and workplace requirements and are accessible to those who are authorised to use them. E.g. records associated with Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations, Noise at Work Regulations, Hand Arm Vibration Regulations or Environmental Permitting Regulations
- Assist the management team in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, Occupational Health, Occupational Hygienists and others as required and directed
- Research Safety, Health and Environmental Issues and best practices. Review updates of health and safety regulations e.g. changes to Construction, Design and Management Regulations or updates to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health along with workplace instructions, making sure that information is from reliable sources
- Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed
- Recognise where decisions have a financial cost and assisting to develop a budget
- Recognise situations where the activity will benefit from contributions and expertise of other internal departments such as HR, Finance, IT or Occupational Health

Training schedule
The structure of the actual apprenticeship will be based on the relevant standards, and will be tailored to take account of the individual employer and apprentice's needs and wants. As a minimum, this will include:
- Briefing and engagement sessions delivered by Bragd and the employer to explain the apprenticeship in more detail
- An initial assessment of your level of relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) to allow a tailored, individualised programme to be developed
- An initial assessment of your level of functional skills including English and mathematics
- An individual learning plan (ILP) that describes the activities that will be completed as part of your learning journey
- A structured programme of off the job training, learning and development activities that meet the ‘OTJ’ requirement, delivered by a team of experienced trainers and tutors
- Ongoing 1-2-1 support from your employer and a dedicated tutor / mentor from Bragd
- Regular assessment and signposting to help you keep you on track with developing the range of required knowledge, skills and behaviours
- Quarterly progress reviews to recognise achievement, confirm additional support needs and identify next steps
- Support and guidance to help you complete your end point assessment, where you will demonstrate the wide range of KSBs you have developed during your apprenticeship programme.
More training information
An apprenticeship includes regular training with your training organisation. Off-the-job training will follow the time allocations outlined in the Occupational Standard.
Once the training plan has been agreed, the structured training will take place at work, whilst you are employed. Our training partner, Bragd LLP, will deliver apprenticeship training.

- GCSE in:
- Maths, English and Computer Science (grade 9 to 4) Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
Due to the nature of the working environment and for various other reasons, this position is only open to applicants aged 18 and over. The site operates a specialist transport environment that includes the use of equipment, machinery and processes that require employees to meet specific health, safety and operational requirements.
