Gard is looking for a Sanctions Legal Adviser to join our Sanctions Team that spans across multiple locations. Gard is the largest P&I club in the world, and our sanctions team is among the largest and most experienced in the industry. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a variety of matters across multiple sanctions regimes in a specialist team that supports Gard’s operations across the organisation and across different jurisdictions.
As a Sanctions Legal Adviser, you will provide practical legal assessments on sanctions-related enquiries, help ensure that matters are escalated and handled at the right level, and contribute to strong, consistent sanctions compliance across Gard.
Your primary focus will be:
- Providing legal advice to colleagues on sanctions-related enquiries and operational sanctions risks
- Ensuring that matters are escalated and dealt with at the correct level within the organisation
- Staying ahead of regulatory and commercial developments, and supporting alignment with regulations and company policy
- Developing, implementing and continuously improving sanctions-related processes and procedures within the Sanctions Team and across Gard
- Maintaining detailed documentation of sanctions-related risk assessments
- Sharing and seeking knowledge within the team and throughout Gard
- Providing sanctions training across the organisation

About you:
- Preferably a solicitor or barrister background, although strong and relevant work experience or other legal background may also be considered
- 2+ years of relevant work experience, preferably within maritime law or sanctions. More experience is beneficial
- Excellent analytical skills, accuracy and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to give clear and firm advice in a diplomatic and constructive way
- Strong collaboration and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to build trust across functions and locations
- The ability to remain calm, reliable and focused when working under pressure
- Thrives in a collaborative environment where high-quality work is often delivered through team effort
- High proficiency in using computer-based tools and applications
