Job Title: AIX Engineer

Location: Telford / Remote Hybrid

Duration: 6 months with possible extension

Rate: Up to £550 per day via an approved umbrella company

We are seeking an experienced AIX Engineer to join a dedicated team responsible for delivering both Managed Services and Project-based activities across our client's account. This is a senior technical role supporting critical enterprise infrastructure environments and contributing to a significant programme of migration and transformation activity.

The successful candidate will provide expert-level support for AIX environments across Live, Development, and Test platforms, while also driving infrastructure change, upgrade, and project delivery initiatives.

About The Role

This senior-level position sits within an established AIX support team responsible for the delivery of both operational support and project services.

The team provides support across Live, Development and Test environments, ensuring the availability, performance, and stability of critical infrastructure. Alongside day-to-day service responsibilities, the team also delivers a substantial volume of change, migration, transformation, and project work.

A significant portion of upcoming activity involves infrastructure modernisation and migration programmes, requiring an engineer who is comfortable working in complex enterprise environments and occasionally supporting planned out-of-hours implementations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide operational support and maintenance for AIX server environments.
  • Administer and support AIX 5, 6 and 7 operating systems across physical and virtual infrastructure.
  • Support and manage Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) v2 & v3 environments.
  • Administer and maintain IBM Hardware Management Console (HMC) platforms.
  • Perform incident investigation, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis for complex platform issues.
  • Deliver change, upgrade, migration, and transformation activities across the estate.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance UNIX shell scripting solutions to support automation and operational efficiencies.
  • Support infrastructure projects throughout the full delivery lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with wider infrastructure, network, cloud, and service management teams.
  • Participate in out-of-hours implementation work where required to support project delivery.
  • Ensure all activities align with service management, security, and operational standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
