Controls Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Remote
Are you an experienced Controls Engineer with a passion for industrial automation, embedded systems, and renewable energy?
We're looking for a Controls Engineer to join a growing engineering team delivering utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Europe. This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge energy storage technology, helping integrate advanced control systems that support the global transition to clean energy.
What you'll be doing
As a Controls Engineer, you will:
- Develop and integrate BESS control logic to meet customer and grid operator requirements.
- Design, implement and test control applications for utility-scale energy storage systems.
- Develop and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
- Support prototype testing and hands-on laboratory evaluations.
- Maintain controls documentation, communication architecture and backup strategies.
- Troubleshoot and resolve controls-related issues during system validation and commissioning.
- Work closely with deployment and engineering teams to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions.
- Support continuous improvement of testing procedures, controls infrastructure and technical KPIs.
- Travel across EMEA to support project delivery when required.

What we're looking for
We're interested in engineers with experience in industrial automation, embedded software or power systems who have:
Essential
- Minimum 4 years' experience in software programming or industrial control systems.
- Strong embedded software and PLC engineering experience.
- Hands-on experience with at least one PLC/RTU platform such as:
- Siemens S7 / TIA Portal
- CODESYS
- TwinCAT
- SEL RTAC
- Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols including:
- IEC 60870-5-101/103/104
- IEC 61850
- DNP3
- Modbus RTU/TCP
- Experience working with SCADA, EMS or substation automation systems.
- Understanding of transmission, distribution and grid-connected energy systems.
- Experience using protocol analysis tools such as Wireshark.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Fluent English.

- OPC UA, MQTT or ICS Gateway experience.
- HIL/SIL testing experience.
- German language skills.
