The Opportunity
Spencer Ogden is supporting a leading organisation within the renewable energy and battery energy storage sector in the search for an experienced SCADA & Controls Engineer to join their EMEA Delivery team.
This is an excellent opportunity to work on utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, with responsibility for SCADA, controls engineering, grid integration, communications, testing and project delivery across EMEA.
You will play a key role in developing and implementing SCADA and controls solutions, integrating BESS control systems with Transmission System Operator (TSO) Energy Management Systems (EMS), and ensuring projects meet technical, operational and grid compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of project-specific SCADA and controls requirements from design through to commissioning.
- Develop controls design documentation, including system architecture, application modes, control philosophies and grid integration concepts.
- Lead the integration of BESS SCADA and control systems with TSO EMS systems.
- Develop control logic and control schemes for remote and local operation of BESS assets.
- Translate grid-code and TSO requirements into functional specifications, control logic and SCADA/EMS solutions.
- Support the development, implementation and testing of SCADA and controls applications for utility-scale energy storage projects.
- Develop and maintain SCADA architectures, communication interfaces and control philosophies.
- Support the implementation of grid services, including active/reactive power control, frequency regulation, voltage control and other ancillary services.
- Work with power converters/inverters and understand their interaction with the transmission and distribution network.
- Support solutions incorporating Grid-Forming (GFM) and Grid-Following (GFL) inverter technologies.
- Develop standardised test procedures and execute FAT and SAT activities to support efficient commissioning.
- Participate in hands-on laboratory, factory and site testing of SCADA and control systems.
- Troubleshoot SCADA, PLC, RTU, communication and control-system issues during project delivery and commissioning.
- Act as the SCADA and Controls interface with clients, TSOs, EPC contractors and subcontractors throughout tender and project execution.
- Support technical compliance and ensure SCADA/control solutions meet client and grid requirements.
- Develop and maintain documentation covering SCADA hardware, applications, protocols, communication links and backup/recovery strategies.
- Maintain effective change-control procedures and associated technical documentation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
