Scala Lead Developer | UK Government Project | Contract
RedRock Consulting are working with a leading consultancy on a high-profile UK Government programme and are looking for an experienced Scala Lead Developer to join the team on an initial 3-month contract.
This is an excellent opportunity to play a key leadership role on a large-scale digital transformation programme, driving the design and delivery of modern, scalable solutions within a government environment.
The Opportunity
As the Scala Lead Developer, you will provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on with development. You will work closely with architects, developers, DevOps engineers, QA teams, and stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality applications.
Contract Details
- Initial 3-month contract
- ASAP start
- Monthly travel to Newcastle (approximately 2 visits per month)
- BPSS clearance required (or eligibility to obtain)
- Inside IR35 - £450 p/d

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of full-stack solutions using Scala.
- Develop and maintain microservices using the Play Framework.
- Drive architectural discussions and contribute to technical strategy.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and leadership to development teams.
- Ensure best practices across coding standards, testing, deployment, and CI/CD processes.
- Conduct code reviews and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to deliver business outcomes.
- Partner with DevOps and QA teams to ensure robust, scalable, and secure solutions.
- Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven leadership experience within Scala development teams.
- Strong commercial experience with Scala and functional programming principles.
- Expertise developing microservices using the Play Framework.
- Experience operating within MacOS or Linux environments.
- Strong understanding of Agile delivery methodologies.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, and modern development tooling such as IntelliJ, VS Code, and sbt.
- Ability to influence architectural decisions across complex codebases.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Previous experience working within large-scale public sector or enterprise environments would be advantageous.
