THE ROLE
This role sits within the Strategic Capabilities team, supporting the delivery of Data Study Groups, the Turing Internship Network and other skills activities focused on real-world data science challenges. You’ll apply and broaden your knowledge across a wide range of data science and AI concepts while working with colleagues, researchers, participants and external partners from industry, government and the third sector.
Reporting to the Strategic Capabilities Manager, you’ll provide academic input into prospective challenges, participant applications and final reports, as well as supporting facilitators and participants during Data Study Group events. You’ll also help assess prospective internship projects and candidates for the Turing Internship Network and promote programme opportunities within your university and wider regional network.
ABOUT YOU
We’re looking for someone currently undertaking a PhD, or with equivalent experience and qualifications, in data science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, computer science or a related discipline. You’ll be fluent in at least one modern programming language used in data science and AI, such as Python, and interested in applying a broad range of approaches to complex, real-world problems.

You’ll bring experience of working with messy data, reviewing academic work and designing studies or experiments that translate practical problems into academic investigations. You should also have previously participated in a Data Study Group, hackathon or similar collaborative event. Previous facilitation experience would be beneficial but is not essential.
HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
- Provide academic feedback on prospective Data Study Group challenges from a participant and facilitator perspective.
- Support the Strategic Capabilities team and Principal Investigators in scoping and developing Data Study Group challenges.
- Advise on the scientific and recruitment aspects of Strategic Capabilities programmes, including projects and participant applications.
- Assess Data Study Group and Turing Internship Network applications and contribute to selection discussions.
- Review final Data Study Group reports and provide academic quality assurance before publication.
- Assess prospective Turing Internship Network projects to ensure they offer challenging and meaningful data science opportunities.
The successful applicant will be expected to attend a weekly one-hour meeting alongside some additional work during the week. The anticipated commitment is approximately 3 to 6 hours per week on average, increasing to up to 10 hours per week immediately before or during a Data Study Group event.

Terms and Conditions
This role is offered on a casual-hours contract for one year from the start date. The hourly rate is £22.76.
