The Alan Turing Institute

The Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s independent national institute for AI and data science. Our mission is to secure the UK’s national resilience for the age of AI, turning world-class research and engineering into capabilities the country can rely on in moments of opportunity, uncertainty and risk.

We are seeking distinguished experts to join our Scientific Advisory Board and provide independent advice and challenge to help ensure that our science is ambitious, distinctive and of the highest quality.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Provide independent advice and constructive challenge on our scientific direction and long-term strategy.
  • Review the quality, relevance and impact of our research programmes.
  • Advise on emerging scientific opportunities, risks and future investment.
  • Help benchmark our scientific capabilities and impact against leading organisations.
  • Strengthen our relationships across the UK and international research ecosystem.
  • Champion responsible and trustworthy AI, research integrity, reproducibility and openness.
  • Act as an ambassador, bringing relevant partnerships, opportunities and talent to our attention.

About You

You will bring significant expertise and leadership in one or more of the following areas:

  • AI, machine learning, AI assurance and safety, cyber security, statistics, complex systems, data engineering or another field relevant to national resilience.
  • Economics, behavioural and social science, public policy, law, ethics or the humanities.
  • Applied AI research or engineering within industry or a sector central to national resilience.
  • Scientific leadership within defence, national security, a research institute or a research-intensive university.
  • Technology translation, innovation, investment or commercialisation.

Terms and Conditions

This is a voluntary and unremunerated position. Members are committed to approximately five to seven days each year, including preparation, travel, plenary meetings and occasional reviews or working groups.
