Our Client, a leading public sector organisation, are seeking a highly experienced Scientific Expert to provide independent specialist advice on psychoactive substances and their potential effects in humans. This is a unique opportunity for an established pharmacologist, psychopharmacologist, medicinal chemist or related specialist to apply their expertise in support of national public protection and criminal justice objectives.
About the Role
They will provide independent scientific opinion on substances that may fall within the scope of relevant UK legislation and may be required to prepare expert reports and provide evidence in legal proceedings.
Responsibilities
- Assess whether a substance is capable of producing a psychoactive effect when consumed.
- Review and interpret scientific evidence relating to novel and emerging substances.
- Evaluate in-vitro and in-vivo pharmacology data.
- Interpret receptor binding and functional pharmacology assay results.
- Prepare clear, evidence-based expert statements and reports.
- Provide independent scientific opinion to support investigations and legal proceedings.
- Support the scientific integrity and quality of casework through objective and defensible analysis.

Qualifications
- Minimum five years postgraduate experience in a relevant field.
Required Skills
- Current specialist expertise in one or more of the following - Psychopharmacology, Pharmacology and Drug Discovery, Clinical Pharmacology and Non-Clinical Pharmacology
- Detailed knowledge and practical experience of In-vitro testing methodologies and In-vivo pharmacology within the drugs arena
- Proven ability to interpret functional pharmacology assay data, receptor binding assay data and pre-clinical pharmacology datasets
- Experience conducting and interpreting basic statistical analyses relevant to pharmacology studies.
- Ability to produce clear, objective and scientifically robust written opinions.

Preferred Skills
- Previous expert witness experience.
- Experience providing evidence in court or other formal proceedings.
- Expertise relating to novel psychoactive substances (NPS).
- Academic, research or pharmaceutical industry profile within the field.
- Access to contemporary scientific literature and research databases.
Commitment
- Work is provided on a freelance ad-hoc basis according to operational demand.
- Typical commitment is expected to be less than 10 hours per month - remote working, outside IR35.
- Workload may vary depending on active case requirements.
- Occasional attendance at meetings or legal proceedings may be required.
