Background and Context

This post provides an exciting opportunity to join the rapidly growing Wound Innovation Institute team at the University of Hull (UoH) as a Scientific Officer. The post holder will be based on our main campus Newlands Science park site in our state-of-the-art research laboratories which have recently undergone a £8M refurbishment programme. The UoH has ambitious plans to significantly develop inter-disciplinary skin and wound research and innovation activity, supported by £16M Research England investment in technology and capabilities, growing our high-quality research and delivering long-term patient benefit. Strategic match support from a consortium of industry partners, will allow us to realise the full potential of this unprecedented opportunity, delivering long-term, transformative impact. The Wound Innovation Institute vision is to deliver real-world benefit through partnership, innovation and interdisciplinarity ensuring patients are at the heart of everything we do.

The role (Scientific Officer – Analytical) is aligned to our recent investment in cutting-edge research equipment. The post holder will provide specialist, advanced scientific and technical expertise within analytical science and engineering and/or biological sciences. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the postholder will lead and support high-quality material research, operational management and/or service delivery, ensuring excellence in experimental design, data generation, quality assurance, governance, and innovation.

The role requires significant practical experience, theoretical understanding, and independent judgement, with responsibility for complex analytical methods, high value instrumentation, compliance, and specialist advice to academic staff and external collaborators. The post holder will have the opportunity to support a wide portfolio of industry and academic projects.

Role outline

The Scientific Officer will provide senior-level scientific and technical expertise within an analytical science and engineering and/or biological sciences discipline. The post holder will play a key role in the operation, development, and strategic use of advanced analytical laboratories, supporting research and external collaborations. The role involves independent scientific judgement, responsibility for specialist instrumentation and methods, and active contribution to research delivery, innovation, industrial projects and commercialisation and knowledge exchange. The post holder will also provide leadership and mentoring to junior technical staff and postgraduate researchers.
