Job Summary
The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
The primary delivery location for this position is Bristol Abbey Wood.

Job Description
The Underwater Defensive Aids Suite (UDAS) team within the Combat Systems Delivery Team will deliver an updated submarine torpedo defence capability for the Royal Navy submarine Flotilla. The UDAS programme is transitioning from Assessment to the Demonstration phase in Q3 2026. This L3 Engineering post will be the UDAS Lead Engineer, delivering future submarine torpedo defence capabilities for Royal Navy Submarines. This post will report to the UDAS Programme Head.
Roles and responsibilities of the post include:
- The production, review and management of documentation required by the Guide for Engineering Activity & Review (GEAR) methodology.
- The preparation and delivery of UDAS GEAR reviews.
- Management of the delivery of all engineering aspects of the UDAS programme, including managing the acquisition safety aspects.
- Management of UDAS Safety and Environmental artefacts.
- Monitoring of sponsored systems / equipment Safety & Environmental artefacts.
- UDAS representation at the Combat Systems Delivery Team Portfolio Safety & Environmental Committee (SEC), including reporting on:
- Key headlines.
- Key risks/issues & plan to address.
- The status of Safety & Environmental artefacts.
- Provide expert advice and guidance in the technical aspects of UDAS, to solve complex technical problems and identify application risks.
- Responsible for ensuring the delivery of all Government Furnished Assets required to support the installation, operation and safety requirements of the UDAS programme.
- Interface with industry as the intelligent customer both in a scrutiny role and supporting the identification of application risks.
- Line Management and functional development of junior colleague(s).
- Engineering support to other cross-functional Professions within the UDAS team.
Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. Person specification
Essential Criteria
- Member of a relevant Professional Engineering /Science Institute or equivalent body.
- Hold Professional Registration as an Incorporated Engineer (Ieng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) (or equivalent relevant registration).
- Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience.
- Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes.
- Wide ranging depth and breadth of technical experience in own specialism with a broad understanding of the interdependencies between your work and related systems.
- Safety & Environmental SQEP to Safety & Environmental Delegated (SED) level.
Candidates must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong cross-functional teamworking capabilities, and a collaborative approach to delivering outcomes.
Licences
Hold Professional Registration as an Incorporated Engineer (Ieng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) (or equivalent relevant registration).
Qualifications
Level 4 Qualification in an applicable Engineering Field
Memberships
Member of a relevant Professional Engineering /Science Institute or equivalent body.
