Job Description

As a Seasonal Groundsperson, you will support the seasonal maintenance, presentation and preparation of the AELTC’s grass courts and other playing surfaces across all venues. Working as part of the Groundstaff team during the busiest operational periods, you will help deliver exceptional standards for Members, their guests, The Championships and other events while developing practical experience in professional sports turf management. This role has an extended recruitment period with the start date in March/April 2027 and is a 7 month fixed term contract.

What You Will Be Doing

Grass court maintenance

  • Assist with the care, preparation and daily maintenance of grass courts across all venues, including mowing, marking out and seasonal court preparation activities.
  • Apply granular and liquid nutrition, soil conditioners and other approved products under supervision and in accordance with best practice and environmental guidelines.
  • Support spring and autumn renovation programmes and assist with the presentation of courts to competition standards.
  • Monitor and report weeds, pests, diseases and disorders, supporting appropriate control measures as directed.

Multi-surface and grounds maintenance

  • Assist in the care and daily maintenance of clay courts, hard courts, covered courts, croquet lawns, ornamental areas, other grass areas and car parks across all venues.
  • Keep grounds, pathways, fencing lines and areas surrounding courts clean, tidy, safe and weed free.
  • Support the preparation and presentation of venues for Members, guests, The Championships and other events.

Equipment and facilities

  • Assist with the care, maintenance and safe operation of equipment, tools, benches, netting systems, court accessories and irrigation equipment.
  • Set up courts for play, including permanent and temporary netting, grass court covers, court cups, water supplies and associated equipment.
  • Operate pedestrian, ride on and tractor mounted machinery, buggies and other authorised vehicles safely and in accordance with site rules.

Health & safety, teamwork and flexibility

  • Maintain health, safety and security in the workplace and comply with company procedures, guidelines and site rules.
  • Take personal responsibility for being in clean and presentable AELTC uniform during working hours.
  • Work flexibly across the Groundstaff and Horticultural Services departments as required across all venues.
  • Carry out any other duties within the department deemed necessary by the Lead Groundsperson.

What part your role will play in The Championships

The Groundstaff Department delivers year-round maintenance and state of the art preparation for The Championships, which sees around 3,500 hours of use during The Championships.

During The Championships period your role will help to support the AELTC’s goal of delivering the world’s premier tennis tournament and supporting one of the world’s most prestigious tennis clubs.

Your role will help provide support across all venues, including The All England Lawn Tennis Club (Championships) Limited (Wimbledon), The All England Club Community Sports Ground (Raynes Park), The Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre (Roehampton) and surrounding areas.

About You

The qualifications, licences, knowledge and experience listed below are essential requirements for the role. Experience with clay, hard or covered courts would be advantageous.

Essential Qualifications And Experience

  • Level 2 qualification, or equivalent, in Sports Turf Management.
  • Proven practical experience in the preparation, maintenance and presentation of fine turfgrass surfaces and other sports surfaces to a high standard.
  • Knowledge of turfgrass maintenance, cultural practices and plant health management.
  • Current full UK Driving Licence (Category B), or a driving licence from your relevant authority/country. It is a condition of employment that the successful applicant holds, and continues to hold, a current full driving licence and can demonstrate the ability to safely operate vehicles including tractors, ride on machinery, buggies and company vehicles in accordance with site rules.

  • Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to work additional hours, days, evenings and weekends in line with rota and shift pattern requirements.

  • Organised, efficient, professional and reliable, with strong attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines and a positive approach to work.

Working pattern

The role is seasonal and based on 40 hours per week. Flexibility is required to meet the demands of the job, including working in accordance with rota and shift patterns that may include additional hours, days, evenings and weekends.

To support the delivery of The Championships and other events across all venues, there may be a requirement to work different rota patterns and extended hours during peak operational periods.

The Groundstaff Department, based at The All England Club Community Sports Ground (Raynes Park) and The Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre (Roehampton), delivers year-round maintenance of hard courts, football pitches, rugby pitches and cricket facilities including the daily maintenance of ornamental, other grass areas and car parks and state of the art preparation for our Qualifying Competition and The Championships.
