Second Engineer – Seagoing
Location: Serco Maritime Services, Kyle of Lochalsh Contract: Permanent, Full-time (6 weeks on / 3 weeks off) Opportunity: Opportunity to live afloat if required
Travel Support: For applicants further than 80 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh, Serco will pay up to 0.45p per mile for travel to and from base.
About the Role
We are seeking a Second Engineer to join our team in Kyle of Lochalssh, supporting a professional maritime service operation. This role involves high responsibility and collaboration with an integrated team to deliver premier maritime services to global customers, including:
- Marine dive support
- Military training
- Submarine rescue operations
- Target equipment deployment and recovery
- Crewed passenger transfers
Serco Maritime Services excels in delivering specialist vessel operations, from harbour workboats to oceangoing vessels, adhering to national accreditation standards.
Main Accountabilities
- Conduct planned, emergency, and preventative maintenance for propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, deck equipment, boilers, fittings, and structures
- Supervise maintenance tasks on main engines and auxiliaries, ensuring work progression aligns with planned schedules
- Maintain constant communication with the Chief Engineer regarding progress and challenges
- Keep engine rooms clean, with unobstructed routes for staircases, ladders, and walkways
- Monitor and document supply levels of spare parts and stores
- Coordinate early alerts with crew and Chief Engineer on potentially hazardous equipment, practices, or occurrences
- Train engine room staff on all safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and ensure contingency plans are understood
- Apply Permit-to-Work and Tag-Out Systems and adhere to broader Shipboard Safety Measures

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Certificate of Competence as Second Engineer (3000kW)

STCW certifications (all required):
- Personal Survival Techniques (5-year refresher)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (5-year refresher)
- Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (5-year refresher)
- Proficiency in Survival Craft (5-year refresher)
- Designated Security Duties (5-year refresher)

STCW Elementary First Aid
-
Unrestricted ENG1 Medical Certificate

Valid Passport
-
Methodical, safety-obsessed work approach
Desirable Qualifications & Skills

Ship’s Safety Officer certification

Manual Handling certification/training

Experience with:
- Integrated Management Systems (IMS)
- International Safety Management (ISM)
- International Ship & Port Facility Security Code (ISPS)
- Code of Safe Working Practices (CoSWP)
- International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 9001
