We are looking for experienced Section Engineers to join the team delivering the Metrowest Phase 1 Project, including the construction of a new railway station at Pill and the reinstatement of the rail line between Portishead and Bristol.
This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in one of the UK's most significant rail reopening schemes, helping to restore passenger rail services to Portishead for the first time in decades.
We currently have two Section Engineer opportunities available:
- Earthworks & Drainage Section Engineer – responsible for the delivery of earthworks and drainage associated with the reinstatement of the railway line.
- Station Section Engineer – responsible for the delivery of the new railway station at Pill.
Reporting to the Site Agent, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of your section of works, leading engineering activities and ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
About The Role
As a Section Engineer, you will take ownership of your allocated work package, working closely with Works Managers, Supervisors, and Site Engineers to successfully deliver project objectives.
You will provide technical leadership, engineering control, and quality assurance while supporting programme compliance and the effective management of site resources and supply chain partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing the day-to-day delivery of designated sections of works.
- Leading engineering and assurance activities across your work area.
- Managing and mentoring Site Engineers and supporting their professional development.
- Working closely with Works Managers and Supervisors to coordinate construction activities.
- Ensuring all setting out activities are completed accurately and efficiently.
- Managing quality assurance and quality control processes across site operations.
- Maintaining accurate engineering records and site documentation.
- Ensuring works are delivered in accordance with approved designs, specifications, and standards.
- Monitoring progress and supporting programme delivery objectives.
- Managing subcontractors and supply chain partners within your work package.
- Supporting the implementation of safe systems of work and promoting a positive safety culture.
- Identifying, escalating, and resolving engineering and construction issues.
- Assisting with inspections, testing, and handover processes.
- Maintaining compliance with client, company, and industry standards.

Essential Experience
What We're Looking For
- Experience as an engineer, preferably within rail infrastructure projects.
- Engineering and assurance experience on rail, infrastructure, or major civil engineering schemes.
- Experience managing sections of work through construction and delivery phases.
- Strong understanding of setting out, engineering control, and quality assurance processes.
- Experience managing Site Engineers, Supervisors, and subcontractors.
- Knowledge of health, safety, quality, and environmental requirements within construction.
- Ability to work within a fast-paced project environment while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Working towards a professional qualification with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or equivalent.

About The Water Aviation And Highways Business Unit

We work with major water companies to create resilient facilities, reduce flood risks, and improve environmental outcomes. Currently, we participate in the Welsh Water AMP7 and AMP8 frameworks and have secured projects with Wessex Water for the next five years. These long-term framework agreements are part of a national £88 billion investment, requiring a collaborative and agile approach to meet the industry's challenges.
