About The Role

As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.
Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Section Engineer to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
The Section Engineer will support and lead civil engineering and construction delivery across the project. The role is focused on traditional section engineering control, including planning, setting out, engineering coordination, safe systems of work, quality, programme, productivity, records, handover and commercial support. The scope may include enabling works, earthworks, drainage, underground services, ducting, roads, pavements, concrete works, structural steel, buildings, compounds, mobilisation works, temporary works, logistics areas, plant and vehicle routes, traffic management interfaces, structures, foundations, retaining works, kerbing, fencing, utilities interfaces and general site infrastructure.
The role is not limited to a single discipline. The requirement is for a capable Section Engineer who can understand drawings, specifications, RAMS, permits, construction sequencing, testing requirements, subcontractor outputs, temporary works interfaces and handover expectations. The role offers the opportunity to work across a major project with varied work fronts, practical engineering challenges and a broad range of construction activities.
This is a delivery-focused engineering role within a major civil engineering and construction environment. The Section Engineer will manage a defined section of works and support the wider delivery team with planning, engineering control, quality, programme, subcontractor coordination, records and handover.
What you'll be doing
Health and Safety
- Promote and maintain high standards of health, safety and environmental performance within the allocated section
- Write and support the production and implementation of RAMS, task briefings and permits
- Ensure RAMS, permits, task briefings and safe systems of work are understood before works start
- Confirm that controls are in place for excavation, temporary works, lifting, plant movements, traffic management, service avoidance, access and environmental protection
- Monitor compliance with project health, safety and environmental requirements and intervene where standards are not met
- Support close call reporting, inspections, incident prevention and close-out of corrective actions
- Support Zero Harm and sustainability requirements objectives through proactive planning, supervision and engineering control
Organisational
- Lead and support Site Engineers, Assistant Engineers and apprentice engineers within the allocated section
- Coordinate with supervisors, foremen, subcontractors and suppliers to support safe and efficient delivery
- Work with other Section Engineers and delivery leads to manage interfaces, access, programme dependencies and follow-on works
- Communicate clearly with construction, engineering, commercial, planning, quality, temporary works and HSE teams
- Support development of junior staff by providing guidance on setting out, records, quality, permits and engineering control
- Escalate issues early where design, safety, access, resources, quality or programme may be affected
- Confirm that drawings, permits, RAMS, access, plant, labour, materials and inspections are in place before works start and monitor works against drawings, specifications, inspection and test plans and project requirements
- Support delivery teams with technical checks, progress updates and practical site problem solving
- Record progress, productivity, material usage and site constraints and complete material reconciliations and records of installed quantities

Operational
- Plan, coordinate and manage day-to-day works within the allocated section
- Confirm that drawings, RAMS, permits, temporary works, access, labour, plant, materials and inspections are in place before works are released
- Support delivery across enabling works, earthworks, drainage, underground services, roads, pavements, concrete works, structures, buildings, logistics and general construction activities
- Monitor progress, productivity, quality and safe delivery against the programme and project requirements
- Coordinate work fronts to avoid clashes, rework, inefficient sequencing or missed handover requirements
- Identify blockers early and agree actions to protect safety, quality, programme, cost and operational readiness
Technical
- Lead engineering control for the allocated section of works
- Review drawings, specifications, permits, survey information, models and construction details before works start
- Coordinate setting out, survey control, technical checks, inspection requirements and hold points
- Ensure technical information is understood by Site Engineers, supervisors and subcontractors
- Identify clashes, missing information, level issues, tolerance concerns and buildability constraints
- Raise technical queries where clarification is required and support practical resolution with designers and technical teams
- Ensure temporary works requirements are identified, briefed, checked and controlled
- Support digital engineering, BIM, model-based setting out and machine control where required
Who we're looking for
Records and Commercial
- Maintain and check accurate records of labour, plant, materials, subcontractor outputs, progress, instructions, delays, constraints and site conditions
- Support cost control, change management and commercial recovery through factual record keeping
- Track productivity, wastage, quantities, additional works and reasons for variance from planned outputs
- Support weekly measures, take-offs, material reconciliations and installed quantity records
- Provide timely information to commercial, planning and project management teams to support valuations, reporting and contract administration
- Ensure records are complete, auditable and aligned with project requirements
Quality and Handover
- Ensure inspection and test requirements are understood, planned and completed at the correct stages
- Manage quality check sheets, inspection records, test records, photographs, red-line information, as-built records and handover evidence
- Confirm that works are delivered in accordance with drawings, specifications, ITPs, permits and project standards
- Support close-out of defects, NCRs, snags and incomplete records
- Ensure handover information is produced progressively as the works are delivered, rather than retrospectively
- Promote a right-first-time approach across the section and use quality trends to improve delivery
The Following Experience And Qualities Are Essential
- Previous experience in Section Engineer role, Site Engineer role, or similar civil engineering delivery role
- Good understanding of civil engineering and / or construction and site delivery
- Ability to lead engineering control for a defined section of works
- Ability to read and understand drawings, specifications, permits, schedules and construction details
- Experience with setting out, survey control, technical checks and construction tolerances
- Understanding of RAMS, Permit to Dig, inspection and test plans, quality records and site documentation
- Ability to produce and manage records, progress updates, as-built information and material reconciliations
- Ability to coordinate site teams, subcontractors and junior engineers
- Good communication skills and confidence raising issues where information or controls are not suitable
- Ability to manage time and work across several site priorities
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and relevant project systems
- Valid CSCS card
- SMSTS or willingness to obtain SMSTS where required
- Willingness to work weekends, nights or adjusted shifts where required

The Following Experience Would Be Beneficial
- ONC, HNC, HND, degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering or a related discipline
- Experience on major infrastructure, energy, highways, industrial, process, rail, aviation, water or heavy civils projects
- Experience in one or more civil engineering disciplines, such as earthworks, drainage, roads, pavements, concrete, structures, underground services, temporary works, compounds, logistics, buildings or steelwork
- Experience managing subcontractors, short-term programmes, production outputs and quality records
- Experience working with temporary works, excavation support, service avoidance and permit-controlled works
- Understanding of BIM, 3D models, digital setting out, machine control or model-based construction
- Experience using digital quality, document control, survey or progress reporting systems
- Awareness of NEC contracts, commercial records, change management and productivity reporting
- Working towards a relevant professional qualification, such as ICE, CIOB, CIHT or IHE
