About The Role
Our Balfour Beatty Highways business has a terrific opportunity for a Section Engineer to join our £1.2 billion Lower Thames Crossing project, consisting of 43 bridges, including viaducts, 17km of complex Highways construction, complex utility diversions, and a scheme-wide, industry leading approach to carbon reduction.
Balfour Beatty Highways maintain, manage and operate major highway networks across the UK and support local authorities creating communities where people want to live, work and play.
As a Section Engineer you will take ownership of engineering activities across a defined section of works. This is a hands-on site-based role where you’ll help translate plans into safe, high-quality delivery, supporting the project team with setting out, quality control, health and safety, programme management and commercial awareness.
What you'll be doing
- Carrying out complex setting out and establishing primary control, ensuring works are delivered accurately and in line with project requirements.
- Coaching and supporting junior engineers and site colleagues in setting out techniques and engineering best practice.
- Producing Activity Control Plans, maintaining quality records and using specifications and contract documents as key reference points.
- Identifying, raising and progressing Non-Conformance Reports and Technical Queries, offering practical solutions where required.
- Preparing Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Temporary Works Briefs, while actively promoting safe systems of work.
- Supporting site inductions, accident reporting and proactive hazard identification to help maintain high health, safety and environmental standards.
- Producing weekly programmes, communicating targets to the workforce and measuring progress against agreed KPIs.
- Collating weekly measure information, monitoring wastage, completing labour and plant reconciliations and identifying additional works for notification.
Who we're looking for
Reasons to use Rodeo
I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
