Section Engineer

Location: Oxfordshire
Rate: £450-£480 per day (umbrella)
Duration: 6 months+ (major 2-3 year project, strong extension potential)
Start: ASAP

Client: Tier 1 Highways Contractor


Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Section Engineer to support a major highways and civils project in Oxfordshire. This is a long-term programme with substantial roadworks, structures and civils activity, offering stable contract work and strong extension prospects.

You will take ownership of site engineering, subcontractor supervision, quality assurance, testing, HSE compliance and technical coordination across key work packages. The role suits a hands-on engineer with strong civils experience and confidence managing subcontractors and site operations.


Key Responsibilities

Site & Subcontractor Management

  • Supervise subcontractors and direct labour to ensure safe, efficient delivery
  • Coordinate daily site operations and maintain progress against programme
  • Support the Project Manager with construction delivery and issue resolution

Technical & Engineering Duties

  • Review drawings, quantities and material schedules
  • Conduct material testing and oversee instrument calibration
  • Maintain accurate quality records and resolve technical queries
  • Keep a detailed site diary and contribute to reporting requirements

HSE & Compliance

  • Ensure all works comply with HSE standards and site procedures
  • Promote safe working practices and support continuous improvement

Stakeholder & Team Coordination

  • Liaise with consultants, subcontractors and multidisciplinary teams
  • Support procurement activities and material planning where required

Essential Experience

  • Strong background in civil engineering
  • Proven experience as a Section Engineer, ideally on roadworks or highways schemes
  • Experience supervising subcontractors and managing site operations
  • Strong problem-solving, planning and communication skills
  • Valid CSCS / CSR / SAFEPASS
  • Willingness to travel or stay away if required

Desirable Experience

  • Familiarity with testing and calibration of site instruments
  • Knowledge of procurement processes and material scheduling
  • Experience working with consultants and multidisciplinary teams
  • Awareness of Lean construction or continuous improvement principles
