Akamai Security Engineer
Rate
Circa £500 - £550 Inside IR35 (Total to umbrella)
Duration
until March 2027 (Extensions expected)
Location
Ideally twice a week on site into Surrey
This role sits within a multidisciplinary security team and will play a key part in protecting customer facing applications, APIs and internet facing services across the business.
You'll be responsible for managing and optimising web and API security controls, driving improvements to security posture and working closely with stakeholders across Security Operations, Architecture, Infrastructure and Technology teams.
What you'll be doing
- Create, maintain and optimise security configurations, protection policies, custom rules and exceptions across web and API security platforms.
- Tune controls to reduce false positives whilst maintaining effective protection against modern threats.
- Support the delivery and continuous improvement of the wider cyber security strategy.
- Identify, manage and drive remediation of security vulnerabilities and exposures.
- Ensure appropriate escalation and reporting of high risk vulnerabilities and security incidents.
- Work across Cyber Security functions including Engineering, SOC, Security Design and Architecture.
- Improve existing security processes, controls and operational practices.
- Present recommendations and security improvements to technical teams and senior stakeholders.
- Support audit and compliance activities including SOX, PwC and internal audits.
- Coordinate evidence collection and remediation activities linked to audit findings.
- Contribute to security projects from design through to successful implementation.

- Strong Cyber Security background with hands on security engineering experience.
- Proven experience administering Akamai WAAP.
- Strong knowledge of WAF policy tuning, application onboarding, API security controls and security profile management.
- Good understanding of OWASP Top 10 and OWASP API Security Top 10.
- Knowledge of HTTP/S, REST APIs and application layer attack mitigation techniques.
- Experience of vulnerability management and exposure remediation.
- Experience using Qualys and external attack surface monitoring tools.
- Understanding of patch management and vulnerability mitigation approaches.
- Experience delivering technology and security projects.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non technical stakeholders.
