Location: James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, TS4 3BW

Salary: AFC Band 3 £25,760 pro rata + night & weekend shift enhancements plus excellent benefits

Schedule: Fixed Term Contract 3-months (with business option to extend the fixed term contract to 6-months or a permanent contract depending on vacancies available), 37.5 hours per week, 12-hour shifts, 4 on 4 off across 7 days, shift times 7am to 7pm or 7pm to 7am. This role comes with a contractual obligation to be flexible towards changing shifts at short notice.

As a Security Officer in our Healthcare team, you’ll play a vital role in keeping NHS environments safe, calm, and welcoming. Your work will protect people, property, and services that our communities depend on every day.

You’ll be a visible, trusted presence across hospital sites, supporting colleagues, patients, and visitors while responding to incidents with professionalism, care, and confidence. From routine patrols to emergency response, your actions will help create a safe space where care can continue without disruption.


What you’ll do as a Security Officer

  • Ensure that all security functions are undertaken in a highly professional, competent, and safe manner in line with current HSE regulations, legislation
  • Provide a professional and highly visible security presence across hospital buildings, car parks, and site boundaries
  • Carry out regular foot patrols, monitor access points, and respond to alarms and incidents
  • Act as a first-line emergency responder, using conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques wherever possible
  • Operate security and control room systems including CCTV, body worn video, radios, and alarm panels
  • Complete accurate incident reports and logs, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with procedures
  • Act as a positive ambassador for Serco and the NHS, treating everyone with dignity, respect, and care

Does this sound like you?

  • Experience working in a customer-facing security role, ideally within healthcare or a similar environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • A team-focused mindset, with confidence using IT systems and writing clear reports
  • To be successful in this position you must be flexible towards shift changes at short notice to meet operational needs of the business
  • Valid SIA Door Supervisor licence
  • Valid SIA CCTV licence
  • Current First Aid qualification in line with SIA requirements

For this position, BS7858 screening will be undertaken. This is a security vetting process for individuals in roles of trust, including criminal record checks, employment history, and financial checks, in line with security industry standards. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire so we can provide any necessary support to help you carry out your responsibilities.
