SEN Teaching Assistant - Kirby, Merseyside
Location: Kirkby, Merseyside
Start Date: September 2026
Contract: Full Time
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
We are currently seeking a compassionate and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and supportive Special Educational Needs (SEN) school in Kirkby, Merseyside on a full-time basis, starting in September 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs. The school caters for pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), speech and language needs, and associated learning difficulties. The school is committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every pupil is encouraged to achieve their full potential.
The Role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and the wider support team to provide tailored support to pupils both in the classroom and through one-to-one or small-group interventions. You will play a vital role in helping pupils access learning, develop confidence, and build essential social, emotional, and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils with a range of SEND to access learning and participate fully in classroom activities.
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support, adapting your approach to meet individual learning and communication needs.
- Assist the class teacher with planning, preparing, and delivering engaging learning activities.
- Support the implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual learning targets.
- Encourage pupils' independence, confidence, communication, and social development.
- Use positive behaviour management strategies to support pupils with behavioural and emotional needs.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and other professionals to provide consistent support.
- Assist with classroom organisation, learning resources, and maintaining a safe, stimulating learning environment.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues while promoting safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND in a school, care, or similar setting is desirable.
- A Teaching Assistant qualification (Level 2 or Level 3) is desirable but not essential.
- Experience supporting pupils with Autism, SEMH, ADHD, or additional learning needs would be advantageous.
- A patient, caring, and resilient approach with a genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- The ability to remain calm, flexible, and proactive in a dynamic school environment.
- A sound understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
