SEN Teaching Assistant (Long-Term / Temp-to-Perm)

Location: South Leeds, West Yorkshire (Belle Isle / Middleton areas)

Contract Type: Long-Term / Ongoing (Potential to lead to Temp-to-Perm) Part-Time or Full-Time

Start Date: September 2026

If so, Randstad Education wants to hear from you. We are currently recruiting committed SEN Teaching Assistants for ongoing, long-term cover, offering both part-time and full-time options, within an outstanding, purpose-built Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (SILC) based in South Leeds.

About The School

They are an Ofsted-rated Good Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (SILC) providing tailored education for pupils aged 2 to 19 across South Leeds. The provision caters to a wide spectrum of complex needs, including severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), autism spectrum conditions (ASC), and physical or medical requirements.

Operating from a main specialist site equipped with state-of-the-art hydrotherapy, multi-sensory, and immersive learning rooms, alongside partnership bases in local mainstream schools, they champion an inclusive, holistic ethos. The school focuses on individualized learning pathways, communication development, and supporting pupils to achieve maximum independence within a nurturing and energetic environment.

Job Role and Responsibilities

In this long-term position, you will become an integral part of a dedicated classroom team, building strong relationships with pupils and supporting their daily progress:

  • Delivering targeted learning support based on individual Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets.
  • Utilising specialized communication tools, including PECS, Makaton, symbol books, and eye-gaze technology, to support non-verbal and pre-verbal learners.
  • Assisting with sensory integration routines, hydrotherapy support, and mobility needs (including hoisting and positioning equipment) where appropriate.
  • Supporting personal care, hygiene, and mealtime routines with dignity and respect.
  • Applying positive behaviour support techniques and managing sensory processing needs during times of distress or overwhelm.
  • Working collaboratively alongside class teachers, speech therapists, physiotherapists, and nursing staff to ensure a seamless model of care and education.

Skills Required

  • Prior experience supporting children or young people with SLD, PMLD, autism, or complex physical needs within an educational, care, or therapy setting.
  • Practical familiarity with visual communication systems, augmentative communication, or basic Makaton.
  • A warm, resilient, and patient demeanour, with a strong commitment to understanding non-verbal cues and behaviour as a form of communication.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with special educational needs (SEN) within the UK.
  • Full eligibility to work in the UK (please note, visa sponsorship is not available for this role).
  • An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to undergo a new check via Randstad.
