We have an exciting opportunity for a Part Time Teaching Assistant to join us at Portfield School, working 2 or 3 days per week.
Working in specialist education is incredibly rewarding. As part of our team, you’ll help create a positive and supportive environment where every student is encouraged to take part, develop new skills and celebrate their achievements.
You don’t need a background in teaching or specialist education to apply. We’re interested in who you are, how you connect with young people and your willingness to learn.
To help you succeed, you’ll take part in our 12-week training programme, giving you the opportunity to build your understanding, develop practical skills and gain confidence in the role. You’ll also have the support of an experienced team around you as you settle into school life.
The role
Your role will be varied. You’ll work alongside teachers and other members of the school team, providing practical and emotional support and helping students engage with their education in ways that work for them. From encouraging a student to try something new to celebrating a milestone they’ve worked hard to reach, your contribution can have a lasting impact.
The role is unbelievably rewarding, some days can be challenging, both physically and emotionally, but you’ll be part of a supportive team every step of the way. Whether you need guidance from a colleague, your line manager, the wider Leadership Team, our Mental Health First Aiders or our Employee Assistance Programme, you’ll have people around you who genuinely care about your wellbeing.

At Portfield School, we know that progress doesn’t always come in big leaps. Hours
- Wednesday (08:30am – 4pm) and Thursday (08:30am – 4pm)
- Monday, (08:30am – 4pm), Wednesday (08:30am – 4pm) and Friday (08:30am – 3:30pm)
- Monday (08:30am – 4pm), Thursday (08:30am – 4pm) and Friday (08:30am – 3:30pm)
- Tuesday (08:30am – 4:30pm) and Friday (08:30am – 3:30pm)
To be successful as a Teaching Assistant, we are looking for someone who:
- Can easily adapt themselves in different situations
- Has a fun and supportive nature
- Doesn’t hesitate to play and get messy
- Displays a calm approach, even when under pressure
- Will support with personal care such as nappies and toilet training
- Can participate in any exercise and activities required
- Will use their initiative where needed
