Independent Ofsted-Registered Special Needs School Volunteer Governor Position
Kingsley Academy is a new independent Ofsted-registered special needs school in Wolverhampton, supporting children and young people with a range of special educational needs and additional needs.
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and experienced Governor to join our Governing Board.
We are particularly interested in candidates with professional experience in Safeguarding within a SEND/special school environment and/or Quality of Education, who can provide constructive challenge, support school leaders and contribute to the continued development of the school.
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who wants to use their professional knowledge and experience to make a meaningful contribution to the lives and education of children with SEND.
The Role
As a Governor at Kingsley Academy, you will work collaboratively with the Governing Board, Proprietor and Senior Leadership Team to provide appropriate oversight, challenge and support.
The successful candidate will ideally have experience in one or both of the following areas:
Safeguarding Governor
You may have experience as a:
- Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
- Deputy DSL
- Safeguarding professional
- Social worker
- Local Authority safeguarding professional
- Education safeguarding specialist
- Child protection professional
- SEND safeguarding professional
- School leader with significant safeguarding responsibility
You will help the Governing Board maintain effective oversight of safeguarding arrangements, including policies, procedures, training, safer recruitment, safeguarding records, attendance and pupil welfare.
Quality of Education Governor
You may have experience as a:
- Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher
- SENCO
- Teacher
- School improvement professional
- Ofsted inspector / education inspector
- Local Authority education professional
- Curriculum leader
- Education consultant
- SEND education specialist

You will support the Governing Board in understanding the quality of education provided by the school, including curriculum, teaching, assessment, progress and outcomes for pupils with SEND.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend Governing Board meetings and contribute actively to discussions.
- Provide appropriate challenge and support to school leaders.
- Maintain oversight of safeguarding arrangements across the school.
- Support the Governing Board in understanding safeguarding risks and priorities.
- Monitor the effectiveness of safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Support oversight of safer recruitment and safeguarding training.
- Consider attendance, behaviour, welfare and pupil safety as part of the school's wider safeguarding arrangements.
- Monitor the quality of education provided to pupils.
- Support the Governing Board's understanding of curriculum development and implementation.
- Consider how effectively pupils with SEND are supported to make progress.
- Review relevant school information, reports and data.
- Contribute to school improvement discussions and strategic planning.
- Attend relevant school visits where appropriate.
- Maintain confidentiality and act in the best interests of pupils.
- Work professionally and collaboratively with fellow Governors, the Proprietor and Senior Leadership Team.
- Help ensure the school continues to provide a safe, supportive and high-quality educational environment.
What We Are Looking For
We would particularly welcome applications from individuals who have:
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding within education.
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND.
- Knowledge of safeguarding requirements within a special school or SEND setting.
- Experience of quality assurance, education, school improvement or curriculum.
- The ability to analyse information and ask constructive questions.
- The confidence to provide appropriate challenge while maintaining positive professional relationships.
- An understanding of the responsibilities of school Governors.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A genuine commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people with SEND.

Previous Governor experience is desirable but not essential. We are particularly interested in the professional expertise, knowledge and experience that you can bring to the Governing Board.

Commitment
This is a voluntary Governor position. Governors will be expected to attend scheduled Governing Board meetings once a term and undertake appropriate preparation between meetings.
The exact time commitment will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake appropriate safeguarding checks, including a DBS check, and provide suitable references and evidence of identity and qualifications/experience where applicable.
