SEND/SEMH Science Tutor – Taunton
Location: Taunton, Somerset

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH Science Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to young people in Taunton.
The successful tutor will have experience supporting young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs and be confident adapting Science lessons to meet individual learning needs, abilities and levels of engagement. Experience supporting learners who may display challenging behaviour, struggle with emotional regulation or find traditional education difficult to access would be highly desirable.
You will need strong Science subject knowledge and the ability to create engaging, accessible lessons within a calm and supportive environment. The focus will be on helping the learner build confidence, re-engage with education and make positive academic progress.
This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.
The Role May Involve
- Providing personalised one-to-one Science tuition to secondary-aged learners.
- Supporting young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Supporting learners who may display challenging or unpredictable behaviour.
- Adapting Science lessons, resources and activities to meet individual needs.
- Supporting Biology, Chemistry and Physics as appropriate to the learner’s level.
- Breaking complex scientific concepts into manageable and accessible steps.
- Identifying gaps in knowledge and supporting areas of difficulty.
- Supporting GCSE Science where appropriate.
- Developing confidence, engagement and positive attitudes towards Science.
- Supporting learners who may experience anxiety, school avoidance or disengagement.
- Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
- Using the learner’s interests and strengths to encourage engagement.
- Using positive behaviour strategies and appropriate de-escalation approaches where required.
- Developing independence, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.
- Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
- Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
- Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the young person’s support.
- Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Essential Requirements
- Strong Science subject knowledge at secondary level.
- Experience teaching or tutoring Science.
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Experience supporting young people who may display challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
- Experience providing one-to-one support is desirable.
- Ability to adapt teaching to individual academic, emotional and behavioural needs.
- Understanding of positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
- A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
- Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
- Experience supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
- Reliable and consistent approach to work.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
- The right to work in the UK.
