Role: Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant - PMLD
Hours: Monday - Friday, full-time

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Bolton, working within a dedicated provision supporting pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).
This is a specialist role suited to someone who understands the level of care, patience and consistency required when supporting pupils with complex learning, communication, physical and sensory needs.
The pupils have a range of additional needs and require a highly individualised approach throughout the school day. Many pupils have limited or no verbal communication and rely on adults to support them with communication, personal care, sensory regulation and accessing their learning.
What You'll Be Doing
As a PMLD Teaching Assistant, you will provide consistent support throughout the school day, helping pupils to engage with learning and develop their independence wherever possible.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with PMLD
- Supporting pupils with complex and profound learning difficulties
- Assisting with personal care and intimate care where required
- Supporting pupils with physical disabilities and mobility needs
- Using visual and alternative communication methods to support pupils who are non-verbal
- Supporting sensory activities and regulation throughout the day
- Helping pupils access adapted and sensory-based learning activities
- Supporting pupils during meals, break times and wider school activities
- Following individual EHCP targets, care plans and specialist support strategies
- Monitoring pupils' wellbeing and communicating any concerns to teaching staff
- Encouraging communication, interaction and independence wherever possible
- Working closely with teachers, therapists and the wider SEND team

The Pupils
The school supports pupils with PMLD and complex additional needs, meaning the successful candidate will need to be comfortable providing both educational and personal support.
You May Be Supporting Pupils Who
- Have Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties
- Have complex communication needs and may be non-verbal
- Have physical disabilities or mobility difficulties
- Require regular sensory input and sensory regulation
- Have complex medical or care needs
- Require support with personal care
- Need significant adult support to access learning and daily activities
The role is about much more than simply supporting children in the classroom. You'll be helping pupils communicate, interact, develop independence and experience positive progress in their daily lives.

You Should Be
- Experienced supporting children or young people with PMLD
- Comfortable providing personal and intimate care
- Patient, calm and compassionate
- Confident supporting pupils with complex physical and communication needs
- Able to recognise changes in behaviour and understand non-verbal communication
- Comfortable working within a sensory-based environment
- Reliable and consistent in your approach
- Able to work closely with teachers and other professionals
- Passionate about supporting pupils with complex needs to achieve their individual goals
Previous experience in a PMLD school, specialist SEND setting, care environment or similar role is highly desirable.

This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS (child and adult workforce), satisfactory references, and full compliance with KCSIE (2026) guidance and safer recruitment standards. Overseas police checks may be required where applicable.
