Grade: G
Contract Type: Permanent
Working Hours: 37 hours per week
About the Role
Thurrock Council is seeking a significantly experienced and highly motivated SEND Statutory Performance and Tribunals Officer to lead and coordinate the Council's response to SEND mediation, disagreement resolution, and Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Tribunal appeals.
The successful candidate will represent the Local Authority at mediation meetings and Tribunal hearings, working closely with families, schools, health partners, social care colleagues, legal services, and independent advisers to secure lawful, child-centred, and evidence-based outcomes.
The role also supports the management of complaints, Local Government Ombudsman investigations, Freedom of Information requests, and Subject Access Requests.
This is a key role within Children's Services and offers an excellent opportunity to influence service improvement, strengthen relationships with families, and support statutory compliance across the SEND system.
Responsibilities
As a SEND Statutory Performance and Tribunals Officer, you will be responsible for:
- Managing a caseload of complex SEND appeals from receipt through to conclusion, preparing Tribunal responses and legal submissions, representing the Local Authority at hearings and mediation meetings, and providing expert advice and guidance to colleagues and partner agencies.
- Playing a central role in analysing mediation and Tribunal trends, identifying opportunities for service improvement, supporting quality assurance activity, and contributing to improved outcomes for children and young people with SEN.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
