Senior Accountant
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Stirling, is currently looking to recruit a Senior Accountant for an initial 3 month contract on a rate of £28.15 – 32.74/hour PAYE. This role would be hybrid based.
Responsibilities
- Prepare the annual revenue budget for relevant services in conjunction with Service and Locality Managers, including the development of savings options where required.
- Ensure monthly budgetary control statements, savings monitoring reports, forecasts and narrative reports are prepared within agreed timescales, highlighting significant issues that require remedial action by service management.
- Ensure all service transactions are accurately recorded and prepare final accounts.
- Provide financial information and advice to relevant services in relation to new service delivery arrangements, strategic initiatives, information systems and project work.
- Complete government grant claims and other returns in accordance with submission deadlines.
- Liaise with internal and external auditors.
- Research and interpret changes in accounting practice and legislation as they affect services, and provide appropriate advice.
- Deliver financial management training to budget holders and others as required.
- Undertake monthly financial analysis of variances against budget, working with service and finance teams to ensure variances are understood, clearly reported and addressed through appropriate action where overspends arise.
- Contribute to the development of underpinning financial plans for service changes, strategic initiatives and project work, ensuring that financial assumptions, risks and implications are clearly identified and reflected in planning and decision-making.
- Support the Chief Finance Officer with forward financial planning, including reforecasting costs and income as assumptions develop during the year and as the financial benefits of partnership activity are realised.
- Work closely with finance colleagues to support aligned financial planning, monitoring, reporting and delivery across the Partnership.
- Deputise for the Chief Finance Officer as required and where appropriate.
- Lead and support monthly, quarterly and annual accounting processes, including budget monitoring, forecasting, financial reporting, year-end accounting and completion of required returns.
- Communicate proactively with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Regularly advise, negotiate with and influence others.
- Maintain frequent, sustained concentration when analysing complex data and statistics, and when preparing financial returns.
- Apply and ensure adherence to statutory regulations.
- Manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
- Develop and manage information.
- Act on own initiative and exercise sound professional judgement.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Work in a mobile and flexible working environment.
- Plan and organise own workload.
- Contribute to the development of plans, policies and strategies.
- Any other relevant tasks passed to the finance team.

- Relevant accountancy qualification, e.g. CCAB or equivalent experience.
- Membership of a Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies recognised body.
- Experience of financial and management accounting, in similar setting.
- Project management experience.
- Experience using MS Office and specialist financial software.
- Experience of developing and maintaining positive working relationships within own team and with partner organisations.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and policy context affecting the provision of the service.
- Professional knowledge and expertise covering the functional areas.
- Working knowledge of Accounting Codes of Practice and other relevant professional standards and guidance.
- Excellent numeracy and literacy skills.
- Business planning skills, and sound organisational skills.
- Analytical skills.
- Ability to organise and manage competing demands.
- Presentation and report writing skills.
- Good attention to detail.
