Senior Accountant
Cardiff
£55,000-£65,000
Some firms talk endlessly about career development while quietly hoping nobody above you ever leaves. This one is actively creating room.
A successful independent accountancy firm is expanding following further investment into an already highly profitable business. Growth has been consistent, client retention is strong and many employees have spent more than a decade with the firm.
The Senior Accountant appointment is aimed at somebody who has developed solid technical experience but now wants broader responsibility and a genuine route into client management. Based in Cardiff, you'll work closely with experienced managers and directors across a portfolio of privately owned businesses.
The role
- Preparing and reviewing statutory accounts
- Taking greater ownership of jobs from start to finish
- Supporting corporation tax and wider compliance work
- Reviewing work produced by less experienced colleagues
- Dealing directly with business owners and finance teams
- Joining client meetings and building your own relationships
- Helping identify issues before they become problems
- Supporting managers across larger or more involved clients

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Every day your agent scans the market matching roles against what actually matters to you, not just keywords on a CV.
Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The firm is relationship-driven and intentionally operates through face-to-face contact with clients. That gives the Senior Accountant considerably more exposure than roles where most client interaction has gradually become a chain of emails and Teams calls.
You'll need recent experience from a UK accountancy practice, with a strong grounding in accounts preparation and ideally some reviewing or supervisory exposure. ACA or ACCA qualification would be useful, although strong qualified-by-experience candidates will also be considered.
Where it can lead
The intention isn't to recruit someone simply to produce more accounts. As you prove yourself, the Senior Accountant will take on greater portfolio ownership, more client meetings and increasing responsibility for reviewing and developing others. The Cardiff team has a strong record of retaining people and creating progression internally, and continued investment is opening further opportunities at manager level and above.
