About the Role

We are seeking a proactive, experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our finance function. The Senior Accountant will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the accounts function within ASEE Group, with responsibility for financial accounting, month-end reporting, reconciliations, statutory compliance and supporting the wider finance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation of monthly financial accounts and supporting schedules.
  • Completion and review of monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Review of bank, supplier and other key account reconciliations.
  • Preparation and review of UK VAT, payroll, subcontractor and other statutory returns prior to submission.
  • Assist with the preparation of branch CIT, VAT, payroll, subcontractor and other statutory returns prior to submission.
  • Preparation of annual financial statements and supporting audit files.
  • Liaising with external auditors and supporting the annual financial audit process.
  • Assist with the preparation of annual budgets and business plans.
  • Supporting month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring deadlines and reporting requirements are met.
  • Review of financial transactions and account postings to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Investigation and resolution of variances, discrepancies and accounting issues.
  • Supporting the maintenance and improvement of financial systems, controls and processes.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards, legislation and internal financial procedures.
  • Ensuring all statutory surveys and financial returns are completed and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Providing financial information and support to management and operational teams as required.
  • Mentoring and providing guidance to junior members of the finance team.
  • Assisting with grant applications and claims where required.
  • Supporting the wider finance function with ad hoc financial analysis and reporting.
  • Any other duties that may reasonably be requested by the Directors or Line Manager.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of financial accounting principles, month-end processes and financial reporting.
  • Ability to analyse financial information, investigate variances and identify issues.
  • Consistently produces accurate financial information and maintains high standards of data integrity.
  • Understands the relationship between financial performance and business operations.
  • Able to communicate financial information clearly and effectively to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and resolving financial and accounting issues.
  • Ability to provide guidance and support to junior finance staff.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and experience using accounting and ERP systems.
  • Maintains high professional and ethical standards when handling financial and commercially sensitive information.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or equivalent, with relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Proven experience in a Senior Accountant, Financial Accountant or similar role.
  • Strong experience in financial accounting, month-end and year-end processes.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and supporting external audits.
  • Strong knowledge of balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls.
  • Experience with VAT, payroll, subcontractor reporting and other statutory compliance requirements.
  • Experience of budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis.
  • Knowledge of project accounting and cost control would be advantageous.
  • Experience using ERP systems such as Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Proficiency in accounting software such as Sage or Xero, with strong Excel skills.
  • Good understanding of UK accounting standards, VAT and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Experience within engineering, construction, contracting or a related project-based environment would be advantageous.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with both finance and operational teams.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of responsibilities and meet deadlines.
  • Must already have unrestricted legal authorisation to work in the UK. The role cannot be offered where a visa, work permit or employer sponsorship is required, either now or in the future. Valid evidence of right to work will be required.
