Job Title: Senior Accountant

We are seeking a qualified Senior Accountant to join a finance team supporting an international upstream oil and gas exploration business. This is a broad, hands-on role suited to a commercially minded accountant who enjoys providing clear financial insight, maintaining strong controls and partnering with operational teams in a fast-paced, capital-intensive environment.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Commercial Director, you will prepare monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts, variance analysis and financial reporting across exploration assets, projects and corporate cost centres. You will work closely with finance, procurement, operations, project and commercial stakeholders, providing accurate reporting and meaningful commentary to support decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L and balance sheet reporting, journals, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations and commentary.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting and long-range planning, working with operational teams to challenge assumptions and explain key movements.
  • Deliver variance analysis across operating expenditure, capital expenditure, exploration spend, project costs and overheads.
  • Maintain strong financial controls and ensure transactions are recorded accurately in line with accounting standards, group policies and approval procedures.
  • Partner with exploration, operations, procurement and project teams to provide insight on commitments, supplier costs, joint venture activity and project performance.
  • Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash flow forecasting, working capital analysis, cost allocation and recharge processes.
  • Prepare reporting packs, KPI analysis and ad hoc commercial analysis for senior finance and business stakeholders.
  • Support audit, tax, statutory reporting and continuous improvement activity across finance processes, ERP systems and reporting.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
