Talentedge are actively recruiting for a driven Senior Accountant for a growing Accountancy Practice in Central London. The role is offering hybrid working (2 days per week in the office) and paying £53-57k per annum + benefits

Role Overview

The Senior Accountant prepares and reviews accounts, corporation and personal tax and related work; acts as a reliable day-to-day contact for clients; provides practical insight; and supports the development and quality of work produced by outsourced providers.

The role offers broad exposure across statutory accounts, management information, corporation and personal tax, MTD for income tax, VAT and advisory work. It suits a finalist ACA or ACCA-qualified student.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review statutory accounts for limited companies, partnerships, LLP and sole traders in accordance with the applicable UK reporting framework.
  • Prepare consolidated accounts for small and medium-sized groups where required.
  • Produce management accounts and clear supporting commentary, highlighting trends, risks and matters requiring client attention.
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts and cash-flow information and help clients understand the practical implications.
  • Ensure working papers, disclosures, lead schedules and supporting records are complete, accurate and ready for final review.
  • Respond to external audit or third-party queries and coordinate the provision of supporting information.
  • Prepare and review corporation tax computations and returns, including deferred tax calculations where relevant.
  • Prepare or review personal tax returns within the individual’s experience, referring specialist matters appropriately.
  • Review VAT returns and support clients with routine VAT queries and corrections.
  • Maintain awareness of filing obligations and ensure technical work is completed in time for internal review and client approval.
  • Identify tax planning points and risks during the course of accounts work and discuss them with the appropriate senior colleague or specialist.
  • Coordinate with payroll, tax and other specialists so advice and compliance work are joined up.
  • Review and send MTD for Income Tax updates for client’s approval and ensure submission before deadline
  • Act as a confident day-to-day contact for an agreed portfolio, developing a clear understanding of each client’s business, priorities and pressures
  • Provide practical commercial observations based on the information available, while recognising when a partner, manager or specialist’s input is required.
  • Plan the timing of client work, agree the information required and manage client expectations around timing and deliverables.
  • Prepare for and participate in client meetings, documenting actions and ensuring agreed follow-up is completed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the service, solve client problems or involve other areas of our expertise.
  • Review bookkeeping and control account reconciliations, resolving or clearly documenting discrepancies.
  • Help clients improve the quality and efficiency of their bookkeeping records and finance processes.
  • Review work produced through Xero, QuickBooks and other relevant accounting systems.
  • Ensure client records, permanent files and practice management contain complete and accurate information.
  • Use Excel effectively for analysis, reconciliations, reporting and review.
  • Review work prepared by outsourced company, giving clear, proportionate and constructive feedback.
  • Support the Practice & Client Services Coordinator by providing clear instructions, timely decisions and accurate updates on client work.
  • Share knowledge, contribute to technical discussions and help maintain consistent practice standards.
  • Escalate possible capacity, quality, technical or client risk issue early, with the relevant facts and a proposed next step.
  • Plan and manage assigned work across a varied portfolio, balancing recurring deadlines and ad hoc client needs.
  • Maintain accurate job stages, target dates and next actions and participate actively in workflow reviews.
  • Monitor time, WIP and budget performance on assigned jobs; identify scope changes and overruns early.
  • Raise invoices in a timely manner and support the resolution of client invoice or debtor queries.
  • Take ownership of portfolio whilst keeping senior colleagues informed of material developments.

  • Accurate, technically sound work is delivered before internal and statutory deadlines and with minimal avoidable review points.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • ACA or ACCA finalist, or close to qualification with a credible plan to complete.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ recent experience in an UK accountancy practice.
  • Strong experience preparing statutory accounts for owner-managed businesses and other larger entities
  • Sound working knowledge of corporation tax personal tax, MTD for Income tax, VAT, payroll, company secretarial and the interaction between the accounts and the different taxes.
  • Experience managing multiple clients and deadlines and communicating directly with business owners or finance contacts.
  • Experience reviewing work and providing helpful feedback
  • Strong Excel skills and confident use of cloud accounting software, particularly Xero or QuickBooks.
  • Experience with TaxCalc, IRIS or similar practice management software.
  • Experience preparing management accounts, budgets, forecasts and cash-flow models.
  • Exposure to consolidated accounts and deferred tax.
  • Experience reviewing outsourced
  • An interest in system improvement, automation and helping clients strengthen their finance processes.
