Senior Accounts Assistant
Location: Head Office, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire
Contract type: Permanent
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday (Hybrid working options available)
Salary: up to £35,000 per annum DOE

We are seeking a talented Senior Accounts Assistant to join our Finance team. Reporting directly to the Head of Finance, you will play a key role in maintaining the integrity of our financial records, overseeing both the Sales and Purchase Ledgers, supporting month-end processes, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional with a retail background who thrives in a fast-paced, commercially focused environment.
Your key areas of focus:
- Take ownership of the Purchase Ledger, ensuring invoices are processed accurately and on time.
- Manage supplier reconciliations and payment runs.
- Process international stock invoices and supplier payments.
- Oversee the Sales Ledger, ensuring timely invoicing, cash allocation, and account reconciliation.
- Produce and analyse monthly aged debtor and creditor reports.
- Monitor ledger KPIs and report on outstanding balances, unallocated cash, and aged debt.
- Manage e-commerce cash reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
- Resolve complex customer and supplier account queries professionally and efficiently.
- Support the Head of Finance with month-end activities and reporting.
- Assist in ensuring financial deadlines are met and controls are maintained.
- Work collaboratively with wider finance and operational teams to improve processes and drive efficiencies.

What our Shoal needs:
- Previous experience in a Senior Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant, Assistant Accountant or similar role.
- Experience working within a retail, e-commerce, wholesale or multi-site trading environment.
- Strong working knowledge of sales and purchase ledger processes.
- Experience preparing reconciliations and aged debtor/creditor analysis.
- Excellent attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Confident communication skills and experience resolving complex finance queries.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
- Experience of accounting software and ERP systems.
- A proactive approach with a desire to identify and implement process improvements.
- AAT qualified or studying towards a professional accounting qualification (desirable).
