Introduction
The AI and Automation Engineer designs, builds, and maintains AI-powered applications, agents, mcp servers, and integrations that support Optimizely's internal teams and workflows. This role works across Optimizely's AI stack along with and other internal systems, to build agents, automations, and tools that solve real business problems. The role partners closely and collaboratively with reporting, data engineering, operations, and other technical teams.
Job Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain internal AI agents, applications, mcp servers, and automation workflows
- Develop and test scripts, APIs, and integrations connecting tools
- Build and iterate on agents that support reporting, operations, and cross-functional workflows
- Design and refine systems to ensure reliable, consistent outputs
- Apply established engineering practices, sound data structure design, and coding standards to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions
- Consider cost models (e.g., token usage, compute, API costs) when designing balancing performance with efficiency
- Conduct experiments and test different approaches, optimizing solutions for performance, speed, and scalability
- Collaborate with other technical teams to ensure clean, reliable data feeds to agents and automations
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues relating to automations and AI processes
- Author technical documentation to clearly communicate designs, behavior, and processes to teammates and stakeholders
- Partner closely with reporting analysts, business stakeholders, and adjacent technical teams to gather requirements and align on solution design
- Champion the use of AI tools across the business, sharing practical thought leadership on where AI can drive impact
- Evaluate and recommend AI tools, models, or frameworks appropriate to project needs, staying familiar with the broader AI technology landscape beyond Optimizely's core stack

Knowledge and Experience
- Delivers well-defined AI development and agent-building projects that contribute to team and functional goals
- Applies established engineering processes and tools to complete complex development tasks with minimal supervision
- Solves complex technical problems using established frameworks and best practices
- Identifies and proposes improvements to development workflows, tools, or agent design within their area of work
- Communicates progress, challenges, and outcomes clearly to teammates and stakeholders
- Collaborates closely within the team and with adjacent partners (reporting, data engineering, operations, business teams) to complete shared work
- Independently executes development tasks within established guidelines and priorities; escalates ambiguous or higher-risk issues to manager
- Builds strong working knowledge of Optimizely's systems and AI stack
- Improves efficiency in day-to-day development and building work; applies approved automation to streamline repeatable tasks

Education
- 3–5 years of software development experience, including experience with AI/ML tools, APIs, or agent frameworks
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, Node), including solid understanding of core data structures
- Experience integrating APIs, working with data pipelines, or building automation workflows
- Familiarity with building or configuring AI agents including MCP-based integrations
- Practical experience with prompt design/prompt engineering for agents or AI features
- Understanding of AI/LLM cost models (e.g., token usage, compute cost) and how they factor into solution design
- Working knowledge maintaining and building with complex datasets
- Strong problem-solving skills, technical judgment, and a collaborative working style
Competencies - Legacy Section
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
