A bit about the job
We are looking for an experienced Senior AI Engineer to lead the technical design and delivery of complex AI solutions and AI agents across a defined business domain or programme. This is a hands-on senior engineering role, combining advanced AI expertise with technical leadership. You’ll take ownership of designing, building and deploying LLM-powered and agent-based systems, ensuring they are robust, scalable, cost-effective and responsibly engineered for use within a regulated financial services environment.
You’ll work closely with product and business stakeholders to turn complex business problems into well-defined AI solutions, while setting the technical quality bar across your area. You’ll also contribute to shared AI engineering standards and patterns across Aviva and provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced engineers.
The role offers the opportunity to work on complex applied AI problems while having a direct impact on how AI is safely and effectively delivered into production.
Skills and experience we're looking for
- Proven experience as a Senior AI Engineer, Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Senior Software Engineer or equivalent.
- Advanced experience designing, building and deploying production-grade AI systems.
- Strong hands-on experience with LLM-powered applications and AI agents.
- Excellent Python and software engineering skills, with experience working in cloud-based environments.
- Practical expertise in context engineering, prompt/context pipelines, agent orchestration and retrieval strategies.
- Experience designing AI architectures that balance performance, scalability, cost, reliability and responsible AI requirements.
- Strong experience with AI evaluation, including approaches for assessing quality, safety, fairness and production readiness.
- Experience implementing monitoring and observability for AI systems, including identifying and responding to changes in system performance.
- Strong understanding of production engineering practices, including testing, deployment, observability and incident response.
- Experience taking ownership of AI solutions throughout the lifecycle, from design and development through to production operation and continuous improvement.
- Ability to make informed decisions around frameworks, tools and technical approaches for delivering AI solutions.
- Experience identifying and managing technical and model risks and escalating material risks through appropriate governance channels.
- Strong understanding of responsible AI principles, including fairness, bias mitigation, data protection and appropriate controls for AI systems.
- Experience working within, or a strong understanding of, regulated environments and the additional requirements this places on AI engineering.
- Ability to make effective trade-offs between delivery speed, model performance, interpretability, governance, reliability and cost.
- Experience providing technical leadership through mentoring, code reviews, architectural guidance and knowledge sharing.
- Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with product, business, engineering, architecture, risk and compliance stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy and taking ownership of complex delivery outcomes.
- Experience contributing to engineering standards, reusable patterns, tooling or communities of practice.
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Relevant AI or cloud certifications would be advantageous.
- Demonstrable experience delivering AI systems into production.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
