AI Platform Engineer – Contract
We’re supporting a major AI platform programme within a high-traffic, highly regulated environment. This is a chance to help build the shared infrastructure that takes AI from isolated experiments to secure, scalable production services used across an engineering organisation.
Role Overview
- Location: Remote, with occasional travel to client site
- Package: Contract – rate, duration and IR35 status discussed at initial stage
- Industry: AI / Technology / Regulated Consumer Services
- Level: Senior & Principal opportunities available
What You’ll Be Doing
- Build and evolve the gateway and routing layer connecting engineering teams with multiple LLM providers, including resilient failover and load-shedding.
- Develop reusable AI platform capabilities that allow product teams to register, discover and deploy services and agents without rebuilding common functionality.
- Design APIs, versioning and promotion workflows that support the journey from experimentation through to production.
- Implement robust access controls using RBAC and OIDC, alongside secure API key management and rotation.
- Improve inference performance through caching, intelligent routing, latency management and cost optimisation.
- Create clear cost attribution and adoption metrics so teams understand how AI capabilities are being used and where they’re delivering value.
- Build governance, auditability and safety controls directly into the platform rather than treating them as an afterthought.
- Establish strong engineering practices around automated testing, observability, documentation, evaluations and fallback behaviour.
- Work closely with client engineers, architects and technical leaders to shape platform decisions and challenge approaches where needed.
- Balance technical quality with commercial realities, explaining architecture decisions through cost, risk and delivery impact.
- Take ownership of delivery, managing priorities, estimates, changing requirements and technical risks.
- Produce practical architecture records, runbooks and API documentation that enable the client’s engineers to operate the platform independently.
- Support knowledge transfer through pairing, code reviews and collaborative delivery from the beginning of the engagement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Main Skills Needed
- Strong production engineering experience with Python or Go, including building and supporting services in live environments.
- Hands-on experience with API gateway technology such as Kong, Envoy or Apigee.
- Practical experience integrating multiple LLM providers such as Anthropic, AWS Bedrock, OpenAI or similar.
- Understanding of LLM routing, resilience, provider failover and production inference workloads.
- Strong knowledge of AWS, Terraform, containers, CI/CD and observability.
- Experience implementing RBAC, OIDC and API key lifecycle management.
- Knowledge of caching, latency optimisation and cost management within high-throughput systems.
- Familiarity with MCP, service registries, tool discovery or similar capability-management patterns would be valuable.
- Comfortable working in regulated environments where security, auditability, privacy and governance are central to engineering decisions.
- Strong consulting skills, with the confidence to join an established engineering organisation and become productive quickly.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technical trade-offs to both engineering and senior stakeholders.
- For Senior-level roles, experience owning substantial platform components and setting engineering standards.
- For Principal-level roles, proven architectural leadership and the credibility to set technical direction with senior client stakeholders.
- AWS, Terraform or relevant Machine Learning / GenAI certifications are useful, but practical delivery experience matters more.
