About the Department

The Global Digital Team is primarily responsible for Sony Music Publishing’s direct digital licensing activities with a focus on multi-territory (Global & Multi-territory) & US direct deals with Digital Service Providers (“DSPs”). DSPs include digital services that provide access to audio and audio-visual content or experiences from the well-established audio streaming services to new entrants offering music related AI services. The team also provides strategic and commercial assistance and guidance in connection with national digital licenses that are not directly negotiated by the Global Digital Team or licenses that are subject to local or regional industry or collective solutions.

About the Role

The successful candidate will work as an integrated part of the Global Digital Team and will have responsibility for:

  • Collecting and analysing digital business intelligence for the Global Digital Team, and presenting findings to senior stakeholders within the business
  • Consolidating digital business intelligence which feeds into the deal modelling process and providing insights into DSP (Digital Service Providers) trends
  • Assist with market analysis, forecasting and other strategy related ad-hoc work related to the broader digital business area

What You’ll Do: (job responsibilities)

Digital Market Analysis & Business Intelligence

  • Responsible for collecting, collating and maintaining the business intelligence databases (per each digital service provider) in relation to headline service reporting, royalty reporting and market share analysis
  • Collect and analyse relevant internal and external market data and track market developments within the digital music space and digital entertainment space
  • Monitor the market and identify and analyse new trends, developments and business models within digital music and related digital content / entertainment markets
  • Ensure that the Global Digital Team and SMP’s senior management are always kept up to date with relevant market trends, movements and events
  • Ensure latest market data and business intelligence is fully utilised when setting / reviewing digital strategy and in connection with digital deal negotiations
  • Identify new types and sources of relevant market data that could be useful for SMP and implement collection and analysis of these
  • Work with other relevant departments in analysing and tracking performance of key digital music services licensed by SMP and communicating highlights and key insights to the business
  • Liaise with SMP’s digital administration partner(s) and other sources to ensure timely access to all relevant raw business intelligence data such as SMP’s market shares and performance of digital music services (including identifying new types of data that would be relevant to collect and analyse)
  • Assist with developing and expanding the ‘Business Intelligence Tool’ and other reporting data sets to ensure the business has access to timely, relevant and accurate data via this tool
  • Deliver timely ad-hoc analysis work when needed by the team and the wider business
  • Assist in collating and maintaining quarterly and monthly global FX rates by territory database

Deal Modelling & Negotiation Support

  • Manage DSP consolidated databases which is the foundation of the data that feeds into deal models
  • Perform ad-hoc quantitative analysis as required by the negotiation team
  • Assist in creating slides and presentations for use in negotiation meetings (and with internal stakeholders)
  • Work with team in updating digital deal models to inform internal budgets and track fiscal year forecasts
  • Support Digital Team to analyse fiscal effects of both finalised deals and “live” deals still in negotiation
  • Be a junior member of the negotiation team for medium sized deal negotiations

Digital Growth Strategy

  • Assist in preparing regular senior level business review presentations of SMP’s digital business and strategy
  • Work closely with local SMP analytics teams to analyse and provide insights of SMP’s local and re-aggregation digital distributions to the SMP local affiliate offices, plus benchmarking these society distributions to our central deals and identifying any potential opportunities for increasing our local digital royalties
  • Assist in the analysis of existing SMP digital arrangements with societies, sub publishers and digital services outside of Europe and the Americas and help develop strategies for optimising these relationships and increase value creation for SMP’s songwriters
  • Assist in the analysis of the digital market situation and SMP’s potential in markets outside Europe and the Americas and help formulate go-to-market strategies for markets with high growth potential
  • Assess the size of identified growth opportunities and help identify new potential partners and business opportunities in the digital music space
  • Support updating key digital partner’s quarterly earnings releases/investor relation decks
  • Comfortable in the use of the various social media and digital music platforms with an understanding of how they fit into the overall music landscape

Who You Are:

Qualifications: Essential (E) or Desirable (D)

  • Educated to at least degree level (quantitative degree preferred) (E)
  • Degree in a quantitative area/subject a plus (D)
  • Minimum 2+ years’ relevant work experience (E)
  • Experience from either Management / Management Consulting, Finance / Banking or similar type of highly analytical role (D)
  • Exposure to Financial Analysis, Business Development and/or Strategy within the music / media industry a plus (D)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel is essential (E)
  • Management consulting level analytical skills with the experience and ability necessary to translate market analysis and data into actionable recommendations (E)
  • Business acumen and commercial focus – using quantitative data to drive key business decisions and strategy (E)
  • Organisation skills - ability to independently manage day-to-day work including prioritising own time (E)
  • Strong oral and written communications skills - ability to communicate analysis, findings and proposed actions effectively to senior colleagues and business partners (E)
  • Skills in creating clear and professional looking presentation decks would be highly desirable (D)
  • Understanding of and/or interest in the music industry and the digital music market including the various players and rightsholders involved would be a plus (D)
