Senior / Lead AOSP Engineer (Embedded Android)
Cambridge, UK (On-Site) | Competitive Salary + Bonus + Equity
A leading European technology company developing next-generation Android-based hardware and software platforms is looking for an experienced AOSP Engineer to join a highly skilled Core Applications team.
This is an opportunity to work on complex Android platform engineering challenges, influence the future architecture of industry-leading products, and help deliver software used globally in modern hybrid working environments.
We're looking for engineers who are comfortable working across the Android stack, from low-level platform and system components through to middleware and applications.
Important Location Requirement: This position requires regular on-site collaboration in Cambridge, UK. Applicants should be willing and able to work on-site as part of a collaborative engineering team.

The Opportunity
You'll join a cross-functional Core Applications group responsible for the services and applications that sit on top of a custom Android platform. The team delivers and maintains critical software that powers connected devices, while collaborating closely with platform and embedded teams responsible for lower-level Android components.

Key projects include:
- Supporting new device launches and adapting software for new hardware platforms
- Modernising and evolving existing Android platform architecture
- Porting services and functionality across Android versions, including Android 15
- Developing services and frameworks that support next-generation collaboration platforms
- Enhancing security, reliability and performance across the Android stack
- Working across applications, middleware, framework and platform layers
Requirements:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience
- Strong AOSP (Android Open Source Project) experience strong preferred
- Experience building, customising and debugging Android platforms
- Strong understanding of Android security concepts including: App Permissions and SELinux
- Experience with Android IPC technologies including: Binder and HwBinder
- Experience working with Android HALs, AIDL and platform interfaces
- Strong programming skills in C/C++, Java and/or Kotlin
- Experience working with Git-based development environments and CI/CD pipelines
- Proven ability to work across multiple layers of the Android ecosystem
- Technical leadership, mentoring or senior engineering experience
- Excellent communication and remote collaboration skills
Open to Platform Engineers looking to grow
We are particularly interested in speaking with Senior Embedded Linux and Platform Engineers who may not have spent their entire career in AOSP but have extensive experience working at the platform layer.
