EMI Consulting is a growing multidisciplinary consultancy based in Hendon, North London, providing architectural design, structural engineering, Building Regulations, Principal Designer, and Party Wall services.
We work across a broad range of residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects, including:
- Residential extensions and refurbishments
- Loft conversions
- Internal alterations and reconfigurations
- HMO and property conversions
- Complex structural alterations
- Commercial refurbishments
- New-build and mixed-use projects
- Planning and Building Regulations applications
- Technical and construction drawing packages
Due to continued growth, we are looking for an experienced ARB-registered Senior Architect to join and help lead our expanding architectural team.
We are looking for more than a strong design portfolio. We need an Architect who can take ownership of projects, make confident technical decisions, and drive work from initial brief and feasibility through planning, Building Regulations, technical design, and construction.
This is a hands-on senior role with genuine responsibility, direct client contact, and close collaboration with our in-house Structural Engineers.
The Role
As a Senior Architect, you will manage your own portfolio of projects while helping maintain and develop the technical standards of EMI’s architectural team.
Project Leadership & Delivery
- Lead projects from feasibility through planning, Building Regulations, technical design, and construction
- Manage several live projects simultaneously
- Take ownership of programme, quality, and project delivery
- Lead client discussions, design reviews, and technical meetings
- Coordinate directly with consultants, contractors, and our in-house Structural Engineers
- Identify design, regulatory, and construction risks early and resolve them proactively
Architectural Design & AutoCAD
- Produce and review high-quality architectural drawings using AutoCAD
- Prepare detailed plans, sections, elevations, and construction details
- Develop practical, buildable architectural solutions
- Review and coordinate drawing packages before issue
- Maintain strong drawing and technical standards across projects
Planning & Building Regulations
- Prepare and manage planning applications
- Lead Building Regulations / Building Control submissions
- Deal directly and confidently with Building Control
- Respond to technical comments and coordinate design amendments
- Apply strong working knowledge of UK Building Regulations and construction methods
- Coordinate architectural information with structural engineering designs and calculations
Surveys, Sites & Technical Coordination
- Attend measured building surveys where required
- Attend site inspections across London and surrounding areas
- Resolve construction queries and technical issues during delivery
- Coordinate architectural, structural, and consultant information
- Review buildability and construction sequencing where required
- Communicate directly with contractors and site teams

Team Leadership
- Review and check work produced by Part I and Part II Architectural Assistants
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring
- Help improve internal drawing standards, templates, and technical processes
- Support the continued development of EMI’s architectural team
- Contribute to a culture of accountability, technical quality, and efficient project delivery
About You
Essential
- Current Architects Registration Board (ARB) registration and legal entitlement to use the title Architect in the UK
- At least 3 years’ experience independently leading and delivering UK architectural projects, with demonstrable responsibility for live project outcomes
- Strong hands-on experience delivering residential extensions, loft conversions, refurbishments, structural alterations, HMO/property conversions, and similar small-to-medium UK projects
- Proven ability to independently take projects through feasibility, planning, Building Regulations, technical design, and construction stages
- Strong experience preparing and managing planning applications and Building Regulations / Building Control submissions
- Direct experience dealing with Building Control, including receiving technical comments, coordinating required amendments, and progressing matters through to resolution
- Advanced professional AutoCAD capability – essential, with confidence producing and reviewing plans, elevations, sections, technical details, and coordinated drawing packages
- Strong knowledge of UK Building Regulations, planning requirements, construction methods, materials, and buildability
- Strong technical detailing capability, including the ability to develop practical and buildable construction solutions rather than relying solely on standard details
- Ability to interpret, coordinate, and review structural engineering information, including beams, openings, foundations, and other structural alterations
- Experience coordinating directly with Structural Engineers, consultants, contractors, and site teams
- Experience attending measured surveys and site inspections, identifying technical issues, and resolving construction queries
- Proven experience communicating directly with clients, managing design discussions, and progressing decisions confidently
- Experience reviewing and checking architectural drawings and technical work produced by Part I / Part II Architectural Assistants, providing technical direction, feedback, and mentoring where required
- Ability to lead and support junior architectural team members while maintaining drawing quality, technical standards, and project deadlines
- Ability to manage multiple live projects simultaneously, prioritise workloads, and maintain accurate project documentation
- Strong project-management, communication, and organisational skills
- Ability to make sound architectural and technical decisions and progress projects without continual supervision
- Comfortable working from our Hendon, North London office five days per week, with site attendance across London and surrounding areas as required

Highly Desirable
- RIBA Chartered Membership
- Commercial and mixed-use project experience
- HMO and complex residential conversion experience
- Experience within a multidisciplinary architecture and structural engineering consultancy
- Experience supervising or mentoring architectural staff
- Experience reviewing and checking technical work produced by others
- Strong commercial awareness and client-management capability
- Full UK driving licence
Our Working Environment
AutoCAD is our principal architectural drawing platform.
At EMI, Architecture and Structural Engineering sit within the same consultancy. This means our Architects work directly alongside Structural Engineers rather than passing information between disconnected consultants.
We also use structured digital project-management systems, including monday.com, to manage workloads, deadlines, and project visibility. Previous monday.com experience is not required.

This is a full-time, office-based position, five days per week initially, with site attendance across London and surrounding areas as required.
