About The Role
We are recruiting for a Senior Asset Engineer [Geotechnics] to be part of our Southern Region Asset Management Team.
You will be responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and resilience of a diverse portfolio of earthwork embankment, soil and rock cutting assets, including major earthworks such as Folkestone Warren, as well as managing risks associated with historic mining and third-party slopes. You will also be responsible for identifying, prioritising, and remitting schemes for delivery by our partners, ensuring they align with our Strategic Business Plan.
The successful candidate will support the Regional Asset Manager (Geotechnics) by taking a lead role in making informed, evidence-based decisions to manage earthwork assets effectively. You will lead the development and implementation of intervention strategies and the application of geotechnical asset management processes in line with Network Rail standards and policies. Your work will directly support the safe and reliable operation of the railway.
We are seeking a proactive and motivated individual who is keen to develop their expertise and work collaboratively within a dynamic team. Previous experience in geotechnical or asset management and strong analytical and communication skills are essential. This role is based in London Puddle Dock (Blackfriars) and operates under a hybrid working policy, with an expectation to be at a Network Rail location (either in the office or on site) for a minimum of 60% of the working week.
Key Accountabilities
As Senior Asset Engineer (Geotechnics) you'll:
- Lead the examination, evaluation, assessment and risk management of geotechnical assets. Manage compliance of examination and evaluation of geotechnical assets against requirements of standards.
- Provide engineering input to the standards and specifications for earthworks examinations and assessments.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive asset records to support effective decision-making and compliance.
- Direct the implementation of geotechnical monitoring systems.
- Analyse all asset data to identify trends, risks, and failure precursors, recommending appropriate actions.
- Be responsible for the development of route asset management plans, including all maintenance and renewal activities and asset strategies, providing the prioritised investment work bank.
- Support Renewals colleagues in the inclusion of all investment items into appropriate programmes and track through to completion including approval of programme changes.
- Support Renewals colleagues in the prioritisation of investment and inclusion of works within delivery programmes.
- Oversee the production of the route business plan and development of remits and technical specifications for renewal and maintenance activities.
- Provide engineering input into the specification and management of examination contracts, investigating and resolving technical and quality issues with suppliers.
- Liaise with internal teams and external stakeholders, including community relations, to resolve geotechnical issues affecting neighbours and third parties.
Your Experience And Skills
Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Incorporated Engineer and/or member of relevant professional institution
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a relevant geotechnical / geological discipline
- Substantial experience in geotechnical asset examination, assessment and renewals
- Working knowledge of geotechnical and drainage engineering policies and standards
- Understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Experience in Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
- Experience in application of design methods (simple and complex)
- Working towards Chartership status
- Full UK driving licence or equivalent

Desirable
- Chartered Engineer, Chartered Geologist or equivalent geotechnical qualification
- 10 years relevant experience
