Job Description
TJX Europe (trading as TK Maxx and HomeSense) is seeking an employment lawyer to join our growing Legal Department, and to support the European business. The role is based in our European Head Office in Watford, UK and will join an established European employment legal team of 5 employment lawyers (4 based in Watford, 1 based in Germany).
The role will primarily be responsible for providing employment legal guidance and support in relation to our operations in the UK, but with a remit to also support in giving legal advice across our European operations.
The job holder will work closely with other members of the employment legal team, playing a crucial role in providing legal guidance and support. You will be responsible for handling a wide range of legal matters and ensuring compliance with applicable laws. Your primary objective will be to provide individual and collective employment law support to the business in achieving its goals and objectives, whilst helping to protect the company's legal interests and highlighting and/or minimizing risk.
The successful candidate will partner closely with our business functions as well as our Human Resources, Employee Relations and Social Partnering teams on a broad range of individual and collective labour and employment related matters and will advise all levels of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Advisory: Providing timely and accurate individual and collective employment law advice and counsel to business partners on a broad spectrum of legal issues, including exit procedures, disciplinaries, grievances, investigations, pay and benefits, employment documentation, right to work, TUPE and strategic projects. Providing sensitive, risk-based advice to senior stakeholders on individual and collective labour law issues and risks.
- Employment Rights Act 2025: Advising on the application and implementation of the ERA 2025, supporting the business in adapting to significant changes in UK employment law (including new rights of access), assessing legal risk, updating policies and practices and delivering strategic guidance on compliance.
- Trade Unions and Works Councils: Advising on collective matters, including trade union and works council issues.
- Employment Disputes: Managing employment disputes in collaboration with HR and external counsel.
- Compliance and Risk Management: Staying abreast of new UK and EU employment laws and regulations that might impact on TJX Europe’s operations and supporting the business in ensuring compliance. Developing and implementing precedents, policies, and procedures. Identifying and maintaining visibility of trends and risk areas. Strategic management of employment and employment compliance legal risk (both existing and on the horizon).
- Training and Education: Conducting or supporting the provision of legal training and legal updates, both within the function and the wider business.
- External Relationships: Managing effective relationships (locally and cross border), with external legal counsel, including budgets. Co-ordination of external counsel advice across different European jurisdictions.

Key Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Relevant experience as a UK qualified employment lawyer (at least 10 years’ post qualification experience as an indicative level, although suitable candidates with experience outside this band will be considered) in a recognised law firm or an in-house position.
- Prior in-house experience or experience advising in retail or fast-moving consumer goods.
- Experience in multi-national organisations, or advising multi-national clients, as well as managing legal advice from other jurisdictions.
- Experience in navigating union environments and delivering practical legal solutions that support business objectives while maintaining constructive union relationships.
- Ability to engage and influence a variety of stakeholders, including at a very senior level.
- Excellent commercial awareness, with a pragmatic, solution-based approach to issues, and an ability to think at a strategic, risk-focussed level.
- Highly self-motivated and proactive. Able and willing to work autonomously and to collaborate effectively as part of a larger team.
- Strong/ effective oral and written communication skills (English language).
- Openminded, with a high level of integrity and ethics and positively welcomes new challenges and changes.
- You must have the legal right to work in the country you are applying to.
